She had heard him moving.

She had smelled him.

She had detected something human behind the wall long before Emily understood.

Arthur had not intended to harm them.

But that did not make the situation harmless.

The investigators found missing household objects in his hiding place.

Small things.

A spoon.

Food.

A photograph.

A child's future nursery book.

Emily stared at the evidence.

The thought of someone moving through their home while they slept made her stomach twist.

Mark put his arm around her.

"We're done."

Emily nodded.

For the first time, she agreed.

They went to a hotel.

That night Emily cried.

Not because Arthur had been caught.

Because the house she'd imagined as a safe beginning for her family had become associated with fear.

Daisy climbed onto the bed.

Emily wrapped both arms around her.

"You saved us, girl."

Daisy rested her head against Emily's stomach.

The baby kicked.

Emily smiled through her tears.

For a few seconds, everything felt peaceful.

Then Mark said:

"What if we rebuild?"

Emily looked at him.

"The house?"

"Not the house we bought."

He looked toward the window.

"The house we want."

The following morning, Emily returned to Blackwood Lane.

She stood on the porch for a long time.

The house looked different now.

Not because the building had changed.

Because she had.

Mark joined her.

"You don't have to decide today."

Emily looked through the front window.

"I thought I was afraid of the person hiding inside."

"You were."

"I was."

She placed one hand over her belly.

"But now I'm more afraid of letting fear decide where my daughter grows up."

Mark nodded.

They hired professionals to dismantle every hidden passage.

Walls were opened.

Old corridors were removed.

The concealed stairways disappeared.

The strange observation openings were sealed permanently.

They replaced old wiring.

Repaired the roof.

Strengthened the floors.

Every dark cavity became either usable living space or solid construction.

Emily chose bright colors.

Mark installed larger lights.

The nursery became the most beautiful room in the house.

The wall Daisy had once feared became a bookshelf.

There was nowhere left for anyone to hide.

Weeks passed.

Arthur was transferred into appropriate care.

The police completed their investigation.

The old rumors surrounding Elias Thorne were finally documented.

The hidden corridors had apparently been constructed decades earlier for reasons that were never fully established. Some appeared to have been used for storage and concealment. Others were simply bizarre architectural choices.

The mystery had been frightening.

But the house itself had not been evil.

People had simply left too many shadows inside it.

One afternoon, Emily sat on the nursery floor.

Daisy lay beside her.

"You were right," Emily whispered.

Daisy lifted her head.

"You knew."

The dog wagged her tail.

Mark entered carrying a crib.

"Ready?"

Emily smiled.

"Ready."

They assembled it beneath the bay window.

Sunlight filled the room.

Emily looked around.

There were no scratches.

No hidden doors.

No dark openings.
