His jaw tightened.

"Who touched it?"

Evelyn pointed toward the three men.

Marcus looked at them.

The tall man lifted his chin.

"You got a problem?"

Marcus stood.

"No."

The answer was so calm that the man's grin disappeared slightly.

Marcus turned back toward Evelyn.

"Did you see who did it?"

"No."

"Any witnesses?"

"Maybe inside."

Marcus nodded.

"Good."

The tall man laughed.

"Good? Your girlfriend's bike is trashed and you're saying good?"

Marcus finally looked directly at him.

"She's not my girlfriend."

"Then what is she?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Family."

The word landed differently.

Evelyn looked at him.

Marcus had been Daniel's closest friend for twenty-three years.

He had served with Daniel in the military before both men returned to civilian life.

When Daniel became sick, Marcus had been there.

He had driven Evelyn to the hospital at two in the morning.

He had repaired the leaking roof while Daniel was undergoing chemotherapy.

He had helped clean the garage after the funeral.

And when Evelyn finally learned to ride, Marcus had followed her for the first hundred miles in his truck because he didn't trust himself not to worry.

The three men knew none of this.

They only saw an older man with a gray beard.

Then police lights swept across the parking lot.

Two officers stepped out.

Officer Rachel Monroe approached first.

"Who called?"

Evelyn raised her hand.

"I did."

Rachel looked at the motorcycle.

"Is this yours?"

"Yes."

"Did you see who damaged it?"

"No."

Rachel nodded.

"Then we'll talk to everyone."

The tall man immediately stepped forward.

"Officer, we didn't do anything."

Rachel looked at him.

"I didn't ask whether you did."

His face hardened.

"We were inside."

Rachel glanced toward the building.

"Anyone able to confirm that?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation lasted less than two seconds.

But Evelyn noticed.

Marcus noticed too.

Rachel did.

She wrote something down.

"Names?"

The tall man sighed.

"Brent Dawson."

"And your friends?"

"Tyler Mills. Cole Ramsey."

Rachel recorded the names.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"Do you know these men?"

"No."

Brent laughed.

"Exactly."

Rachel ignored him.

"There's a camera above the back entrance. We'll check it."

The laughter stopped.

Brent glanced toward the building.

Marcus saw it.

Evelyn saw it.

Rachel definitely saw it.

And suddenly, the three men were less confident.

Officer Monroe approached the Harley.

"Can you move it?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"Not safely."

Rachel crouched near the damaged floorboard.

"Then we'll leave it here until the photographs are taken."

Brent muttered something.

Evelyn looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"No," Evelyn said. "Say it."

Brent smiled.

"I said it's just a motorcycle."

Marcus stepped forward.

Evelyn put a hand on his arm.

He stopped.

She looked at Brent.

"No."

Brent frowned.

"No what?"

"It's not just a motorcycle."

Her voice remained calm.

"That's something you'll understand eventually."

The Camera

At 7:32, Murphy's Roadhouse manager Tom Bell brought the security footage outside.

He was a heavy man in his late forties who looked uncomfortable with the attention.

"Camera's old," he said.

Rachel took the monitor from him.

"Old doesn't mean useless."

They watched.

The footage showed Evelyn parking at 6:43.

She walked inside.

The three men remained near the rear patio.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then Evelyn's Harley became the center of the frame.

Brent looked around.

Tyler stood near the entrance.

Cole walked toward the motorcycle.

Brent followed.

The footage was silent.

But everyone could see what happened.

Cole kicked the rear tire.

Brent picked up a metal tool.

He dragged it across the fuel tank.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

He kicked the bike over.

Tyler laughed.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Not because she was surprised.

Because seeing it was worse.

Daniel had spent hundreds of hours caring for that motorcycle.

And these men had destroyed part of it in less than a minute.

Rachel paused the footage.

"Tom, can you preserve this?"

"Yes."

"All copies."

"Absolutely."

Brent stepped forward.

"Wait."

Rachel turned.

"That's not what happened."

She looked at the frozen image of Brent holding the tool.

"It appears very clearly to be what happened."

"I was moving it."

"With a metal bar?"

Brent swallowed.

"It was already damaged."

Rachel looked at him.

"Before you touched it?"

"Yes."

"Interesting."

Marcus stood beside Evelyn.

"Officer."

Rachel turned.

"Yes?"

"Can you zoom in on the tool?"

Tom enlarged the image.

The object had a distinctive red handle.

Marcus stared at it.

"I know that tool."

Brent's expression changed.

Marcus continued.

"It's from the maintenance shed behind the restaurant."

Tom looked startled.

"How would you know?"

Marcus pointed toward Brent.

"He was carrying it when he came outside."

Rachel looked at Tom.

"Who has access to that shed?"

"Employees."

"Anyone else?"

Tom hesitated.

"Members of the motorcycle group sometimes use it."

Brent snapped.

"We don't steal anything."

Rachel raised a hand.

"Nobody said you did."

Brent went quiet.

Rachel rewound the footage.

This time, she watched the minutes before the vandalism.

At 6:58, Brent appeared near the shed.

At 6:59, he entered.

At 7:01, he came out holding the red-handled tool.

Rachel stared at the screen.

"Mr. Dawson."

"What?"

"Why did you go into the maintenance shed?"

"I needed something."

"What?"

"A rag."

Tom frowned.

"There are no rags in there."

Brent stared at him.

"You don't know what's in your own shed?"

"I do."

Rachel closed her notebook.

"You're going to come with us."

Brent's face reddened.

"You're arresting me?"

"For questioning."

"Over a motorcycle?"

Rachel looked at Evelyn.

Then at the Harley.

"No."

She turned back to Brent.

"For vandalism."

Tyler stepped backward.

Rachel noticed.
