A second photograph showed Victor handing Brent an envelope.
Then another.
A document appeared.
Payments.
Monthly.
For "security services."
Evelyn frowned.
"Security for what?"
Marcus scrolled.
The answer appeared.
Private intimidation.
Property damage.
Surveillance.
Threats.
"They've been watching people connected to Daniel," Marcus said.
Evelyn felt cold.
"How many?"
"Dozens."
Then Marcus found a list.
One name was at the top.
EVELYN HART.
Her hands went numb.
"What does it say?"
Marcus read silently.
Then looked at her.
"Location. Vehicle. Routine."
Evelyn stood.
"They've been following me."
"Apparently."
"For how long?"
Marcus scrolled farther.
Six months.
Then twelve.
Then eighteen.
Evelyn remembered things she had dismissed.
A truck appearing behind her on the highway.
A motorcycle parked across from her house.
A stranger at a gas station.
She had assumed coincidence.
It wasn't.
Then another file opened.
A recording.
Daniel's voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
"If you're hearing this, Evelyn, then I'm gone."
She covered her mouth.
Marcus looked down.
Daniel continued.
"I don't know whether Victor will come after you. I hope he doesn't."
A cough.
Then silence.
"I need you to understand something."
Another breath.
"You were never weak."
Evelyn began crying.
Daniel continued.
"You were simply kind enough to believe the world was kinder than it sometimes is."
She closed her eyes.
"Don't become afraid."
The recording ended.
No music.
No dramatic goodbye.
Just silence.
Evelyn wiped her face.
Marcus placed a hand on her shoulder.
"We're going to finish this."
She nodded.
But then she looked at the screen.
There was one final folder.
IF THEY COME FOR THE MOTORCYCLE.
Evelyn clicked it.
Inside was a single video.
Victor Lang appeared on screen.
He was sitting behind a desk.
He looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel," he said, "if you're watching this, you've made a serious mistake."
The video continued.
Then Victor said the words that changed everything.
"The motorcycle isn't the evidence."
He leaned toward the camera.
"It's the key."
The Key
The next morning, Evelyn returned to Murphy's Roadhouse.
The Harley had been moved into the evidence area behind the building.
Rachel Monroe met her there.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I need to see the motorcycle."
Rachel hesitated.
"Why?"
Evelyn told her everything.
Not every detail.
Not yet.
But enough.
Rachel listened.
When Evelyn finished, Rachel looked at Marcus.
"How much evidence do you have?"
"Enough to make someone nervous."
Rachel sighed.
"Then we need federal authorities."
Evelyn nodded.
Before they could continue, a black SUV entered the parking lot.
Two investigators stepped out.
One introduced himself as Special Agent Daniel Reeves.
Evelyn stared at him.
"Daniel?"
He smiled faintly.
"Different Daniel."
Marcus almost laughed.
Reeves looked at the Harley.
"Mr. Hale tells me you found evidence."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Evelyn pointed.
"In the motorcycle."
Reeves examined the bike.
"Could Victor have known about the compartment?"
"Apparently."
"Then why didn't he take it?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"Maybe he didn't know exactly where it was."
Reeves nodded.
"Possible."
They opened the saddlebag.
Inside was an old maintenance manual.
Reeves flipped through it.
Nothing.
Then Evelyn remembered Daniel's note.
Don't let fear win.
She looked at the manual.
"Wait."
She took it.
The cover was thick.
Too thick.
Marcus noticed.
They opened it.
A second compartment had been carved into the binding.
Inside was a small brass key.
Reeves stared.
"That's what Victor meant."
Evelyn frowned.
"A key to what?"
Reeves turned it over.
A number had been engraved on it.
417.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"Storage unit."
They searched Daniel's old records.
The key belonged to a storage facility twenty miles away.
Unit 417.
Evelyn suddenly understood why Victor had wanted the motorcycle.
Not because of the motorcycle itself.
Because Daniel had hidden the trail to something much larger.
And Victor had spent six years trying to find it.
Now he knew Evelyn had discovered it.
Which meant time was running out.
Unit 417
The storage facility sat behind an abandoned warehouse.
Unit 417 was at the end of a narrow corridor.
Reeves opened the lock.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Bank records.
Legal documents.
And one metal briefcase.
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was a notebook.
Daniel's handwriting filled every page.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Meetings.
Witnesses.
Everything.
Marcus turned pale.
"Daniel documented all of it."
Reeves nodded.
"Enough for a major case."
Then he stopped.
"What?"
Reeves pointed to a name.
Victor Lang — Informant?
Beside it was a question mark.
Evelyn frowned.
"Informant?"
Marcus stared.
"I never knew."
Reeves read further.
"Victor wasn't just stealing money."
"What was he doing?"
"Recruiting people."
"For what?"
Reeves turned another page.
"Illegal surveillance network."
The room fell silent.
Victor had been collecting information on executives, veterans, lawyers, investigators, and anyone who might expose him.
The motorcycle club wasn't merely a group of bullies.
They were one small part of a larger operation.
Brent and Tyler had been hired to intimidate people.
Others had been paid to monitor targets.
And Victor had used charitable organizations as cover.
Evelyn looked at the notebook.
"Why would Daniel keep this instead of giving it to the police?"
Reeves answered carefully.
"Because he may not have trusted everyone."
Marcus nodded.
"Daniel believed someone inside law enforcement was compromised."
Evelyn stared.
"Who?"
Reeves closed the notebook.
"We'll find out."
A sound came from outside.
Metal striking metal.
Everyone froze.
Reeves reached for his radio.
Another sound.
Then footsteps.
Someone was walking toward the unit.
