Because Lena was right.

And he knew it.

For months, Summit Martial Arts had been changing.

The academy had grown.

More students.

More tournament medals.

More social-media videos.

More people waiting to join.

Ryan, Derek, and Caleb had become the public face of the advanced program. They were skilled instructors, talented competitors, and popular with the younger students.

But somewhere along the way, something had shifted.

Beginners were pushed harder than necessary.

Visitors were quietly tested.

Students who said they wanted a light round were encouraged to “challenge themselves.”

And those who declined hard sparring were often asked again.

Nothing catastrophic had happened.

Not yet.

But Thomas had started hearing the same sentence from people who quietly stopped coming.

I never felt like I was allowed to be new.

At first, he had blamed scheduling.

Then money.

Then work and family obligations.

But after hearing the same complaint from enough former students, he could no longer ignore the possibility that the problem was inside his own academy.

Thomas looked back at Lena.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“I know.”

“Still want to?”

She considered the question.

Then nodded.

“Three separate rounds.”

“Thirty seconds.”

“Technical only.”

Thomas looked at Ryan.

Then Derek.

Then Caleb.

“You hear that?”

They nodded.

“No ego.”

Ryan smiled.

“Always.”

Lena looked at him.

“That’s usually what people say right before bringing ego.”

This time, even Thomas laughed.

Ryan did not.

Thomas walked toward the center of the mat.

“Everyone clear some space.”

The students moved back.

A circle formed.

Thomas took out his phone.

“Ryan first.”

Ryan stepped forward.

The amusement was gone from his face now.

He rolled his shoulders.

Lena removed her shoes.

And that was when the room changed.

Not because of anything dramatic.

Not because Lena suddenly revealed a tattoo, a belt, or some symbol of experience.

She simply stepped onto the mat.

And settled.

Her weight seemed to disappear into the floor.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Her eyes became still.

Ryan noticed.

For the first time that evening, he looked uncertain.

Thomas noticed something else.

Lena was not nervous.

She was not excited.

She was not angry.

She looked like someone preparing to do a familiar job.

“You ready?” Ryan asked.

Lena nodded.

Thomas raised his phone.

“Go.”

Ryan moved immediately.

Fast.

Aggressive.

Exactly as Lena expected.

Thirty Seconds

Ryan reached for her wrist.

Lena gave it to him.

That was his first mistake.

The moment his fingers closed around her arm, Ryan committed his weight forward.

Lena turned.

Not away.

Into him.

Ryan's expression changed.

His balance shifted.

His feet scrambled for position.

Lena's hip touched his.

A moment later, Ryan was on the mat.

The entire academy inhaled at once.

Ryan rolled quickly, trying to recover.

Lena was already beside him.

Not on top.

Not forcing him down.

Simply controlling the space where he needed to move.

Ryan reached for her leg.

Lena stepped over his arm.

His hand missed.

He tried to sit up.

She redirected his shoulder.

He turned.

And suddenly his arm was trapped.

Ryan froze.

Lena's grip tightened.

Not violently.

Precisely.

Ryan looked down.

Then at her.

He understood.

“Tap,” Lena said.

Ryan hesitated.

The timer continued.

Three seconds.

Four.

Five.

Ryan slapped the mat.

Thomas stopped the clock.

Fourteen seconds.

Silence.

Lena immediately released him and stepped back.

“You okay?”

Ryan sat up.

His face was red.

“I slipped.”

Lena nodded.

“Probably.”

Ryan stared at her.

That answer somehow made him angrier.

Thomas looked toward Derek.

“Your turn.”

Derek stepped onto the mat.

Unlike Ryan, he did not rush.

He circled.

His eyes narrowed.

“You train wrestling?”

“Sometimes.”

“That wasn’t wrestling.”

“No.”

“What was it?”

Lena smiled slightly.

“Something else.”

Thomas started the timer.

Derek came forward.

He was stronger than Ryan and knew it.

He reached for a body lock.

Lena allowed him to get close.

Derek tightened his grip.

Then he drove forward.

It should have worked.

It had worked against hundreds of people.

But Lena lowered her center of gravity and moved one foot six inches.

That was all.

Derek's momentum continued.

Lena redirected it.

Suddenly Derek was turning.

Then falling.

His shoulder touched the mat.

Before he could recover, Lena had taken his back.

One arm slipped across his chest.

The other controlled his wrist.

Derek tried to power out.

He pulled.

Lena moved with him.

He twisted.

She followed.

He drove backward.

She changed the angle.

Then her forearm settled beneath his jaw.

Derek's eyes widened.

He tapped.

Thomas stopped the timer.

Nineteen seconds.
