“Better.”

Thomas smiled.

“That's all?”

“You want a trophy?”

“I was hoping for something.”

Lena laughed.

Ryan walked over.

“Actually, we have something for you.”

Thomas held out a small box.

Lena stared at it.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a black belt.

Lena immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Ryan laughed.

“We knew you'd say that.”

“You don't get to give me a belt.”

Thomas smiled.

“We know.”

“So why?”

Derek stepped forward.

“It isn't from us.”

Lena looked confused.

George Harlan appeared from the hallway.

He was holding a certificate.

“I called some people.”

Lena stared at him.

“George.”

He smiled.

“Your old instructor.”

Her expression changed.

“My instructor died twelve years ago.”

“Not everyone he trained did.”

George handed her the certificate.

Lena read it.

Then stopped.

Her hands began to tremble.

For several years, a group of Lena's former training partners had been trying to locate her.

George had found them through the nonprofit network.

They had submitted documentation of her training history, teaching experience, and years of continued study.

The recognition had been approved by the senior instructors of her original lineage.

Lena looked at the belt.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Finally, she closed the box.

“I don't need this.”

George nodded.

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because sometimes,” George said gently, “recognition isn't about proving something to other people.”

Lena looked down.

“Sometimes it's about accepting what you already earned.”

Her eyes filled.

Ryan quickly looked away.

Derek pretended to study the ceiling.

Caleb wiped his face.

“Allergies,” he muttered.

Lena laughed through her tears.

Then she took the belt from the box.

Not because she needed it.

But because, for the first time in a very long time, she was ready to accept it.

All of You

The students gathered around the mat.

Someone asked Lena if she would demonstrate a technique.

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

“I volunteer Derek.”

Derek frowned.

“Why me?”

“Because you're big.”

Caleb added, “And slow.”

Derek glared at him.

Lena smiled.

“Actually, all three of you.”

Ryan stopped.

Caleb blinked.

Derek folded his arms.

The students began laughing.

Ryan looked at Lena.

“Again?”

She stepped onto the mat.

“All three.”

Ryan grinned.

“At once?”

Lena smiled.

“No.”

“That would be stupid.”

The entire academy laughed.

One at a time.

Thirty seconds each.

Just like before.

But this time, everything was different.

Ryan stepped onto the mat first.

He bowed.

Not casually.

Respectfully.

“Ready?” Lena asked.

Ryan nodded.

Thomas started the timer.

Ryan attacked.

Lena moved.

They exchanged positions.

Ryan nearly caught her arm.

Lena escaped.

The timer ended.

No tap.

Ryan smiled.

“Better.”

“Much.”

Derek went next.

He was more controlled now.

He used his strength carefully.

He listened to her movement.

The round ended with both of them breathing hard.

Caleb went last.

He was still fast.

Still explosive.

But no longer reckless.

When the timer ended, Lena smiled.

“All right.”

Caleb looked relieved.

“Did I win?”

Lena raised an eyebrow.

“Did you learn nothing?”

Everyone laughed.

Caleb lowered his head.

“Right.”

Thomas stepped into the center of the room.

He looked at the students.

Then at his instructors.

Six months earlier, three black belts had stood around a woman they did not know.

They had looked at her clothes.

Her age.

Her appearance.

The fact that she wore no belt.

And they had decided she had nothing to teach them.

They had been wrong.

But the most important lesson had never been that Lena Carter could defeat three black belts.

The lesson was simpler.

And much harder.

Skill did not make someone wise.

Strength did not make someone right.

And a black belt did not give anyone permission to stop listening.

Lena tied the belt around her waist.

Ryan looked at her.

“So.”

She looked back.

“So?”

“Which one?”

Lena smiled.

He nodded toward himself, Derek, and Caleb.

“Which one of us was the easiest?”

The students waited.

Lena considered the question carefully.

Then pointed toward all three.

“All of you.”

Ryan groaned.

Derek laughed.

Caleb shook his head.

And then Lena added:

“But not anymore.”

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then the academy erupted in applause.

Lena looked around the room.

At Karen.

At Marcus.

At Ryan, Derek, and Caleb.

At Thomas.

At the beginners who had arrived believing they might be too old, too weak, too inexperienced, or simply not good enough to belong.

She smiled.

“Now,” she said, stepping into the center of the mat, “who wants to train?”

Every hand went up.

And this time, nobody had to prove they belonged.
