“Come on, Coach.”
“No.”
Raymond's voice was firm.
“This is a training facility, not a stage.”
Marcus looked at the students.
“They're already watching.”
“That is exactly why we're stopping.”
Maya stood quietly.
She knew Raymond was right.
She also knew that the room had changed.
This wasn't friendly anymore.
The three men wanted a story.
They wanted to test the woman who had walked into their gym without a belt, without a reputation, and without showing any interest in impressing them.
And Maya had made one mistake.
She had given them an answer they couldn't resist.
“All three.”
Tyler smiled again.
“Then let's make it official.”
Raymond looked at Maya.
“Last chance.”
Maya looked at Noah.
Noah shook his head.
“Don't.”
She walked toward him.
“Are you scared?”
He nodded.
“For me?”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“For what they'll do.”
Maya put a hand on his shoulder.
“Then watch.”
She turned back toward the mat.
“Let's go.”
The room became completely silent.
Raymond slowly stepped aside.
“Controlled contact,” he warned.
Tyler nodded.
Marcus nodded.
Ryan nodded.
Maya said nothing.
She simply raised her hands.
And for the first time that night, the smiles disappeared from the faces of the three champions.
Because there was something in her stance that none of them had expected.
Not aggression.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She wasn't looking at three opponents.
She was looking at three patterns.
Three habits.
Three problems to solve.
The bell rang.
And all three men moved.
The First Thirty Seconds
Tyler attacked first.
He was the fastest.
Everyone in the gym knew it.
At six feet tall, with a compact frame and years of competitive experience, Tyler specialized in explosive entries.
He expected Maya to retreat.
She didn't.
She stepped diagonally.
His hand reached for her shoulder.
She redirected his wrist.
Tyler stumbled half a step.
The room reacted immediately.
“Whoa.”
Marcus moved in.
Maya barely had time to turn before Marcus attempted to close the distance.
She dropped her level.
His hands passed over her shoulders.
Maya pivoted behind him.
She did not attack.
She simply moved.
Ryan came from the opposite side.
Maya saw him.
She stepped backward.
Tyler was already turning.
For three seconds, Maya was surrounded.
Then she did something none of them expected.
She stopped.
Completely.
Tyler hesitated.
Marcus hesitated.
Ryan hesitated.
Maya looked at them.
“You're going to get in each other's way.”
Ryan smiled.
“We're not beginners.”
“I know.”
“Then don't worry.”
“I’m not.”
Tyler attacked again.
This time, Maya let him come.
He reached for a clinch.
She changed levels and caught his balance.
Not enough to throw him.
Just enough to make him step.
Marcus immediately entered.
Tyler's shoulder blocked Marcus.
That was all Maya needed.
She moved through the gap.
Marcus turned.
Too late.
Maya tapped his shoulder.
“Dead.”
The gym exploded with laughter.
Marcus stared at her.
“That doesn't count.”
Maya shrugged.
“Then don't let me touch you.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“Okay.”
He was different.
Ryan was patient.
He did not rush.
He circled.
Maya circled with him.
The other two waited.
For the first time, Ryan looked serious.
“You've trained before.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Maya didn't answer.
Ryan stepped in.
Maya blocked.
He changed direction.
She followed.
He attempted a sweep.
She withdrew her leg.
Then she caught his wrist.
Ryan pulled back.
Maya released him.
“Better.”
He smiled despite himself.
“You're evaluating us.”
“Yes.”
Tyler laughed.
“She thinks she's coaching now.”
Maya looked at him.
“You keep dropping your right hand.”
His smile vanished.
Marcus chuckled.
“She's right.”
Tyler glared at him.
“Stay out of it.”
Maya nodded toward Marcus.
“Your left foot is too heavy when you close.”
Marcus's expression changed.
Ryan looked between them.
“And me?”
Maya looked at him.
“You're the problem.”
Ryan laughed.
“What does that mean?”
“You don't commit until you're certain.”
“That's a bad thing?”
“Against one person, no.”
She paused.
“Against three, it makes you predictable.”
The room went silent.
Raymond watched carefully.
He had seen enough.
Maya wasn't simply surviving.
She was studying.
And the three champions were slowly becoming aware of it.
Tyler attacked again.
This time Marcus moved simultaneously.
Maya sidestepped.
Tyler and Marcus nearly collided.
Ryan stepped forward.
Maya caught his momentum.
She used his movement to redirect him into Marcus.
Both men stumbled.
Tyler stopped.
The entire room erupted.
Noah's mouth fell open.
Maya looked at the three men.
“You're proving my point.”
Tyler's face reddened.
“This isn't over.”
“No.”
“It just started.”
Maya nodded.
“Exactly.”
He charged.
Maya moved.
He chased.
She redirected.
Marcus joined.
Ryan joined.
Within seconds, the mat became a blur of movement.
But Maya refused to fight where they wanted.
She never stayed in the center.
She never allowed all three to face her simultaneously.
She constantly changed angles.
She made them block each other.
She forced them to turn.
She created hesitation.
And hesitation was enough.
At one point, Tyler managed to grab her arm.
Ryan moved in.
Marcus moved too.
Maya rotated.
Tyler lost his grip.
Marcus nearly collided with Ryan.
Maya slipped free.
Then she tapped Tyler's chest.
