The stranger glanced at him.
"I'm looking for Coach Cole."
The laughter grew.
Jax spread his arms.
"That's him."
He pointed toward the far side of the gym.
"But if you're here for private lessons, you should probably warn him you're fragile."
The stranger didn't react.
He simply nodded.
"Thank you."
Then he walked across the room.
That was the first thing Marcus noticed.
The man didn't look intimidated.
He didn't look angry either.
He simply moved.
Quietly.
Without needing anyone's approval.
And for reasons Marcus couldn't explain, that bothered him.
The Man Nobody Knew
Coach Raymond Cole was forty-six and had spent most of his adult life around fighters.
He had seen arrogant champions.
He had seen frightened beginners.
He had seen men twice their opponents' size get submitted by teenagers.
He knew better than most that appearances meant almost nothing on a mat.
When the gray-haired man approached him, Cole immediately recognized him.
"Daniel?"
The man smiled.
"Ray."
They shook hands.
Marcus stopped talking.
Leo's eyes narrowed.
Jax frowned.
"You know him?"
Cole nodded.
"Years ago."
Daniel Harris looked around the gym.
"Still smells the same."
Cole laughed.
"Unfortunately."
They exchanged a few quiet words.
Daniel asked about the academy.
Cole asked about his family.
Neither man explained the relationship.
That made Jax curious.
After warm-ups, the students paired off.
Daniel stood against the wall.
He didn't ask to train.
He didn't put on a gi.
He simply watched.
For nearly twenty minutes, nobody paid much attention to him.
Then Jax made a mistake.
He became bored.
He had already submitted his training partner twice and was looking for something else to occupy himself.
His eyes landed on Daniel.
"Hey."
Daniel looked up.
"You train?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not anymore."
Jax smiled.
"That's probably smart."
A few people laughed.
Daniel said nothing.
Jax walked closer.
"You sure you don't want to try?"
"No."
"Scared?"
"No."
"Then why not?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because I don't need to."
The gym became quiet.
Jax's smile disappeared.
Marcus looked interested.
Leo stopped rolling.
Coach Cole sighed.
"Jax."
"I'm just talking."
"Then talk to someone who wants to listen."
Jax ignored him.
"You know, old man, this is a martial arts academy."
Daniel nodded.
"I noticed."
"You don't just walk in here and act like you're above everybody."
Daniel looked genuinely confused.
"I haven't acted that way."
Jax stepped closer.
"You should leave."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"I'll leave when I'm finished talking to Ray."
That was when Marcus stood.
"Maybe you should show some respect."
Daniel turned toward him.
"For what?"
Marcus blinked.
"For the people who train here."
"I respect people who train hard."
Marcus stepped closer.
"And what do you think we do?"
Daniel looked at the three men.
"I think you train hard."
A pause.
"And I think you enjoy being watched."
Nobody laughed.
Jax's jaw tightened.
Marcus took another step.
"What's your name?"
"Daniel."
"Last name?"
"Harris."
Leo suddenly froze.
Something about the name had triggered a memory.
He had heard it before.
Years ago.
But he couldn't place it.
Coach Cole saw Leo's expression.
