"Leave it alone."

Leo looked at him.

"Coach?"

Cole shook his head.

"Leave it alone."

That warning only made Marcus more curious.

The Challenge

The next evening, Daniel returned.

This time he brought a small gym bag.

Marcus noticed immediately.

So did everyone else.

Daniel placed the bag near the wall.

He wore a plain white T-shirt and black training pants.

Still no belt.

Still no uniform.

Jax smiled.

"Finally decided to play?"

Daniel looked at him.

"No."

"Then why are you dressed like that?"

"Ray asked me to help with beginners."

Marcus laughed.

"You?"

Coach Cole entered from the office.

"Daniel is helping me tonight."

Jax looked disappointed.

"Helping with what?"

"Fundamentals."

That word made Leo smile.

"Fundamentals?"

Cole nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel began working with three new white belts.

His teaching style was unusual.

He didn't demonstrate quickly.

He demonstrated slowly.

Then he explained why every movement mattered.

He corrected grips.

Foot placement.

Balance.

Breathing.

The beginners listened carefully.

Marcus watched from across the room.

Daniel wasn't showing off.

He wasn't trying to dominate.

But something about his movement felt wrong.

Not wrong technically.

Wrong in the sense that Marcus couldn't understand it.

Daniel seemed to know where people were going before they moved.

When one student attempted a takedown, Daniel shifted half a step.

The student missed.

Daniel caught him gently and returned him to standing.

"Again."

The student tried again.

Same result.

Marcus stared.

Leo noticed.

"See it?"

Marcus nodded.

"He's experienced."

"More than experienced."

Jax scoffed.

"You two are acting like he's some secret master."

Leo didn't answer.

Then Daniel made a mistake.

He turned his back while talking to one of the beginners.

Jax stepped onto the mat.

"Let's find out."

Coach Cole immediately said:

"No."

Jax ignored him.

Daniel turned.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving you a chance."

Daniel sighed.

"I don't want one."

Jax grabbed his shoulder.

The gym went silent.

Daniel looked at the hand.

Then at Jax.

"Let go."

Jax smiled.

"What happens if I don't?"

Daniel moved.

Nobody saw exactly how.

Jax suddenly found himself sitting on the mat.

His wrist was trapped.

His elbow was pinned.

Daniel stood beside him.

No one spoke.

Daniel released him immediately.

Jax stared upward.

Marcus slowly stood.

Leo whispered:

"That wasn't luck."

Coach Cole closed his eyes.

He knew what was coming next.

Forty Seconds

Jax was furious.

His embarrassment turned quickly into anger.

"You cheap-shotted me."

Daniel shook his head.

"You grabbed me."

"Do it again."

"No."

"Do it again!"

Coach Cole stepped between them.

"Enough."

Jax looked at him.

"You knew."

Cole didn't answer.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"What belt are you?"

Daniel shrugged.

"I don't wear one anymore."

Leo laughed nervously.

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

Marcus stepped forward.

"I want to roll."

Daniel looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I want to know if you're actually good."

Daniel smiled.

"That's not the reason."

Marcus frowned.

"Then what is?"

"You want everyone watching to see you win."

The gym became silent.

Marcus stared at him.

Daniel continued.

"If you win, you prove you're strong."

"And if you lose?"
