It was a small, high-quality black leather case, barely larger than a standard bifold wallet. But it wasn't a wallet. As the officer tilted it, the light caught the reflection of a heavy, solid silver emblem stamped securely into the front leather.

The second officer leaned in closer, his mocking smirk beginning to falter as he tried to make out the details of the crest.

Beneath the intricate silver shield, deeply embossed in bold, authoritative lettering, were three words that hit the officers like a physical blow: OFFICIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT.

The first officer stopped breathing. The color drained from his face so rapidly he looked as though he might faint on the spot. The arrogant sneer vanished entirely, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. He knew exactly what that emblem meant. Every officer in the state knew what that emblem meant. It was the absolute highest tier of internal affairs, the department responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and jailing corrupt law enforcement officers.

Chapter 7: The Reckoning

The heavy silence of the country road was deafening. The crickets seemed to have stopped chirping, leaving only the mechanical hum of the police cruiser's engine.

The second officer's arrogant facade completely crumbled. His eyes widened in disbelief, his gaze darting from the leather case to his partner's pale face. "What the hell is that?" he whispered, his voice trembling, stripped of all its former bravado.

Victoria, still standing with her hands securely locked in metal cuffs behind her back, her shoulder pressed against the cold car door, didn't turn around. She didn't need to see their faces to know exactly what was happening. She could hear the panic in their breathing.

"Open it," Victoria instructed quietly, her voice carrying the undeniable weight of absolute authority.

The first officer stared at the back of her head, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped the leather case. Swallowing hard, he fumbled with the edge of the case and flipped it open.

Inside the folio was a thick, laminated identification card. The officer's terrified eyes moved frantically across the photograph. It was a picture of Victoria, looking sharp in a formal uniform. Next to the photo was her name, her rank, and her title: Senior Lead Investigator, Official Investigations Unit. She wasn't just a part of the unit; she was the person who ran the division that hunted bad cops.

Both men froze in complete shock. The realization of what they had just done crashed over them like a tidal wave. They had pulled over a high-ranking internal affairs investigator without cause. They had harassed her, refused to identify themselves, physically assaulted her, and unlawfully placed her in handcuffs. They had essentially handed her their badges, their careers, and quite possibly their freedom, on a silver platter.

"Take the handcuffs off," Victoria commanded. It wasn't a request; it was an order from a superior officer.

The second officer scrambled forward, his fingers shaking so badly he struggled to fit the small key into the keyhole of the metal cuffs. He finally managed to unlock them, the ratchets clicking open. Victoria pulled her arms forward, slowly rubbing her raw, red wrists where the metal had bitten into her skin.

She turned around slowly, fixing both men with a gaze that could freeze water. The two officers, previously towering figures of intimidation, now looked small, shrunken, and utterly defeated. They stood paralyzed, unable to speak, waiting for the axe to fall.

"You stopped a citizen without reasonable suspicion," Victoria began, her voice echoing in the quiet night, ringing with the authority of the law she upheld. "You refused to provide identification. You escalated a peaceful encounter into a physical assault. You unlawfully detained me, and you used excessive force."
