"There."

He pointed again.

Ursula looked down.

Tyler was standing directly on the spot he had identified.

"You are standing on it," she said.

Several students laughed.

Tyler's smile disappeared.

"What?"

"You're standing where you're pointing."

The room became quiet.

Then a few more people laughed.

Tyler stepped aside.

"Fine. Clean it again."

Ursula stood slowly.

She removed her gloves.

Dropped them into the bucket.

Then looked directly at him.

"Clean it yourself."

The silence that followed was different.

Nobody expected those words.

Tyler stared at her.

For three years, Ursula had been invisible to him.

Now, for the first time, he was looking at her.

Really looking.

She wasn't intimidated.

She wasn't angry.

She simply looked tired.

Tyler laughed.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

A teenager near the wall whispered, "Oh, man."

Tyler looked around.

People were watching.

His pride had been challenged.

That was dangerous.

He stepped closer.

"You think you're tough?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Tyler smiled again.

"Then prove it."

Ursula shook her head.

"No."

The audience murmured.

Tyler spread his arms.

"Come on. One round."

"No."

"Just for fun."

"No."

"I'll go easy."

"No."

Tyler laughed.

"You've watched us train for three years. You must have learned something."

Ursula picked up her water bottle.

"Watching doesn't mean I want to fight."

Tyler looked at the crowd.

"Maybe she's scared."

Ursula stopped.

Slowly, she turned around.

"Fear isn't the reason."

"What is?"

"I don't have anything to prove."

The sentence hit harder than any kick.

Tyler's face tightened.

Someone near the front laughed nervously.

Then Tyler crossed a line.

"You've spent three years cleaning floors while people like us actually accomplish something."

The laughter died.

Ursula stared at him.

Tyler continued.

"What are you going to do? Mop me to death?"

Several people looked uncomfortable.

The owner of the academy, Gregory Palmer, finally stood.

"Tyler, that's enough."

But Tyler was already trapped by his own ego.

He couldn't retreat.

Not in front of everyone.

Not with Nathan Cross watching.

So he pointed toward the mat.

"One round."

Ursula looked at the mat.

Then at Tyler.

Then at Nathan.

Nathan was watching her carefully.

Not Tyler.

Her.

Ursula finally spoke.

"If I step onto that mat, you listen when I say stop."

Tyler laughed.

"Sure."

"And no full-power strikes."

"Fine."

"Thirty seconds."

"Fine."

"And if either person stops, it ends."

Tyler shrugged.

"Whatever."

Nathan stood.

"One more rule."

Everyone looked at him.

"No insults. No humiliation. No trying to hurt each other."

Tyler nodded.

"Understood."

Nathan looked at Ursula.

"You don't have to do this."

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

Ursula looked at Tyler.

"Because he keeps asking."

Nathan studied her face.

Then nodded.

Ursula stepped onto the mat.

The woman nobody noticed had just walked into the center of the room.

And nobody there knew what she had been hiding for sixteen years.

The Name She Left Behind

Before Atlanta, there had been Detroit.

Before the cleaning job, there had been a championship ring.

And before Ursula Brooks became the quiet woman everyone ignored, she had been one of the most dangerous amateur fighters in her division.

Nobody at Summit Edge knew.

That was intentional.

Sixteen years earlier, Ursula had walked into a small boxing gym in Detroit after a terrible day.

She was twenty-two.

She was angry.

She was exhausted.

And she had no idea what she wanted from life.

The gym belonged to Raymond Ellis, a retired Army veteran who had once boxed competitively.

Raymond had seen thousands of people enter his gym.

Most wanted to become fighters.

Very few had the discipline required to become one.
