He walked through the crowd with six friends behind him.

People noticed.

Whispers followed.

Tessa immediately saw him.

"Dad."

"I know."

Travis stopped twenty feet away.

"Roark!"

The crowd turned.

Damon sighed.

"Go enjoy the festival."

Travis laughed.

"You don't get to walk away."

Damon looked at him.

"I just did."

The crowd laughed.

Travis's face tightened.

"I'm challenging you."

Damon shook his head.

"No."

"Scared?"

"No."

"Then prove it."

Damon looked at Tessa.

She already understood.

"Don't," she whispered.

Damon nodded.

He took her hand.

Then he removed his watch.

The scratched black watch.

He placed it in her palm.

"Hold this."

Tessa's fingers closed around it.

"Dad..."

Damon stepped forward.

The crowd became silent.

Travis raised his fists.

Damon did something unexpected.

He dropped his stance.

Relaxed his shoulders.

And stood completely upright.

Travis frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Damon answered calmly.

"Giving you the chance to decide whether you really want this."

Β The First Move

Travis charged.

He threw a fast right hand.

Damon moved his head slightly.

The punch missed.

Travis followed with a left hook.

Again, Damon stepped away.

No counter.

No attack.

Just movement.

The crowd murmured.

Travis grew frustrated.

"Fight me!"

Damon said nothing.

Travis kicked.

Damon caught the leg.

For one second, everything stopped.

Then Damon released it.

"You're angry."

Travis attacked again.

This time Damon stepped inside.

His hand caught Travis's elbow.

His other hand controlled the wrist.

A pivot.

A turn.

A step.

Travis suddenly found himself facing the ground.

But Damon didn't take him down.

He released him.

Travis spun around.

"What are you doing?"

"Stopping."

"You think this is funny?"

"No."

"Then fight!"

Damon looked at him.

"I already know how this ends."

That sentence made Travis furious.

He rushed forward again.

This time Damon moved faster.

He redirected Travis's momentum.

The champion stumbled.

Damon caught him.

Lowered him safely.

And held him there.

Not violently.

Not cruelly.

Just completely.

The entire crowd went silent.

Tessa watched from behind the barrier.

Her father's face remained calm.

Travis struggled.

"Let me go!"

Damon leaned closer.

"You wanted everyone watching."

Travis stopped.

Damon continued.

"So remember this moment."

He released him.

Travis rolled away.

He stood slowly.

His pride was shattered.

But something else had changed.

He was afraid.

Not of Damon.

Of the possibility that his entire idea of strength had been wrong.

What Damon Had Been Hiding

After the festival, people began talking.

Some said Damon had military training.

Others claimed he had once been a professional fighter.

Neither was completely true.

The truth was quieter.

Damon had served overseas as a military police officer.

He had spent years learning restraint, defensive tactics, and how to control situations without escalating them.

He had never been a famous fighter.

He had never won a championship.

His strength came from discipline.

His greatest lesson had been simple:

The person who loses control first usually loses everything else.

Tessa learned the truth that night.
