The Fourteen-Second Challenge

“Fourteen seconds.”

Logan Bradley smiled as he said it.

He did not smile at Kiana Moore.

He smiled at the people standing around the mat.

That distinction mattered.

Whitmore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy was packed that evening. Students had stopped rolling. Coaches had stopped correcting technique. Even people in the locker room had begun drifting toward the training floor after hearing Logan announce the challenge.

Phones appeared almost immediately.

Some were recording.

Some were already streaming.

Kiana stood at the edge of the mat in a plain gray training shirt and black leggings. Her natural hair was tied back. She wore no academy patches, no sponsor logos, no belt.

She looked exactly like what Logan wanted everyone to believe she was.

A beginner.

An outsider.

Someone who had wandered into the wrong room.

Logan was the opposite.

He wore a black belt tied tightly around his waist. His academy patch was stitched onto his expensive rash guard. A regional championship medal hung from a hook near the wall with his name printed beneath it.

LOGAN BRADLEY.

WHITMORE BJJ CHAMPION.

He was twenty-nine, six feet tall, broad through the shoulders, and accustomed to being watched.

Especially by people who wanted to become him.

He looked at Kiana again.

“That’s all you’ll last.”

A few students laughed.

Kiana said nothing.

Coach Richard Whitmore stood beside the edge of the mat.

He was fifty-three, thick around the waist, with silver beginning to show in his beard. He had owned the academy for fourteen years.

He raised his voice.

“Everyone back up.”

The crowd moved.

Kiana glanced around.

Some people looked uncomfortable.

Others looked excited.

A few were openly amused.

She noticed something else.

Almost everyone had already decided how this would end.

That was the part she understood best.

People rarely laughed because they knew the truth.

They laughed because they believed they knew it.

Logan stepped closer.

“You understand the rules?”

Kiana finally looked at him.

“Tap means stop.”

His grin widened.

“Good.”

He glanced at the crowd.

“Because I don't want anyone saying I hurt her.”

More laughter.

Kiana looked at Coach Whitmore.

“This is really necessary?”

Whitmore shrugged.

“You wanted to train here.”

“I wanted to join a jiu-jitsu academy.”

“And you said you didn't have prior experience.”

“I said I didn't want to discuss my prior experience.”

That answer caused another ripple of laughter.

Logan shook his head.

“See? That's exactly what I mean.”

Kiana looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“You walk in here refusing to tell anybody anything, wearing no belt, no affiliation, no competition history, and expect everyone to take you seriously.”

“I don't expect anyone to take me seriously.”

Logan blinked.

“Then why are you here?”

Kiana's answer was quiet.

“To train.”

For a second, nobody laughed.

Then Logan stepped onto the center of the mat.

“Fourteen seconds.”

He pointed toward the clock.

“If I submit you in fourteen seconds or less, you agree to leave Whitmore's.”

Kiana's eyes moved toward Coach Whitmore.

“And if I win?”

The coach cleared his throat.

“You get a year's membership. Free.”

Several students exchanged looks.

Logan laughed.

“She won't last fourteen seconds.”

Kiana removed her hoodie.

Underneath, she wore a simple gray shirt.

No logo.

No rank.

No clue.

She folded the hoodie neatly and placed it beside the mat.

Then she stepped forward.

Logan rolled his shoulders.

“Ready?”

Kiana nodded.

The room became strangely quiet.

Coach Whitmore raised his hand.

“Begin.”

Logan exploded forward.

He shot for her legs.

Kiana moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

Her right hand caught his shoulder.

Her left hand controlled his wrist.

For half a second, Logan's expression changed.

He felt something.

Something he could not immediately identify.

He tried to adjust.

Kiana pivoted.

His momentum carried him past her centerline.

She stepped behind him.

One hand controlled his wrist.

The other threaded around his neck.

Logan twisted.

Too late.

Kiana dropped her weight.

Her legs trapped one of his arms.
