“We need to leave,” he said.
“No.”
“Kiana.”
“If I run now, whoever is watching will know I'm afraid.”
“You should be afraid.”
“I am.”
Daniel looked surprised.
She continued.
“But I'm not running.”
She closed the laptop.
“Find Malcolm.”
Daniel nodded.
“I've been trying.”
“Try harder.”
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Kiana answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice whispered:
“Hello, Spectre.”
The call ended.
The Second Fight
Kiana returned to Whitmore two days later.
Everyone noticed.
Logan was the first.
“You came back.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you'd disappear.”
“I considered it.”
He smiled.
“Want another round?”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“You beat me once.”
“Yes.”
“Then prove it wasn't luck.”
Kiana looked at him.
“I don't need to.”
Logan stepped forward.
“You embarrassed me.”
“That wasn't my intention.”
“You made me look weak.”
“No.”
Kiana paused.
“You did that yourself.”
Several students fell silent.
Logan's face reddened.
He moved toward her.
Coach Whitmore intervened.
“Enough.”
Logan stopped.
But something had changed.
He no longer wanted to humiliate her.
He wanted revenge.
That night, after class, Logan followed Kiana outside.
“You think you're special.”
Kiana turned.
“No.”
“Then what are you?”
She stared at him.
“A person who wants to train.”
He laughed.
“You don't belong here.”
Kiana's expression hardened.
“Maybe you're right.”
She stepped closer.
“But neither does cruelty.”
Logan had no answer.
For the first time, several students who had laughed at her began looking uncomfortable.
One of them, Marcus Hill, approached her afterward.
“I owe you an apology.”
Kiana nodded.
“Thank you.”
“I laughed.”
“I remember.”
Marcus looked down.
“I shouldn't have.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“Are you really a beginner?”
Kiana smiled faintly.
“No.”
That was all she said.
The Man in the Photograph
Daniel eventually discovered the identity of the man standing beside Malcolm.
His name was Victor Hale.
Former intelligence contractor.
Officially retired.
Unofficially, he had disappeared from every government record six years earlier.
Daniel placed documents on Kiana's table.
“Malcolm was investigating him.”
“Why?”
“Financial transfers.”
“Money?”
“Not ordinary money.”
Kiana studied the pages.
Military equipment.
Private security companies.
Black-market logistics.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
Then she saw one word.
Whitmore.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What does this mean?”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Victor Hale funded martial-arts academies as recruitment fronts.”
Kiana stared at him.
“Whitmore?”
“I'm not saying Whitmore is involved.”
“But?”
Daniel pointed to a transaction.
“Someone connected to this academy received money from one of Hale's companies.”
Kiana stood.
“So Logan?”
“Maybe.”
“Coach Whitmore?”
“Maybe.”
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
Kiana looked toward the window.
For the first time, the academy wasn't simply a gym.
It was potentially a doorway.
And somebody had deliberately placed her in front of it.
The Trap
Kiana went back to training.
She changed nothing.
That was the point.
She still wore plain clothes.
She still trained quietly.
She still asked ordinary questions.
But now she watched.
She watched who spoke to whom.
Who entered after hours.
Who avoided cameras.
Who carried locked bags.
Who received phone calls outside.
She noticed Logan leaving the academy late one night.
He met a man in a dark SUV.
Kiana followed at a distance.
The SUV stopped behind an abandoned warehouse.
The man inside handed Logan an envelope.
Kiana photographed the license plate.
Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.
The man turned.
It was Victor Hale.
Kiana almost stepped forward.
But she stopped herself.
Hale entered the warehouse.
Logan followed.
Kiana called Daniel.
“I found him.”
“Who?”
“Victor Hale.”
Daniel went silent.
“Where?”
She gave him the location.
Then she heard another voice behind her.
“You shouldn't be here.”
Kiana turned.
A man stood ten feet away.
Black jacket.
Gloves.
Calm expression.
Kiana recognized him.
Not from the academy.
From her memories.
He had been there the night Malcolm disappeared.
Kiana's breathing slowed.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Spectre.”
