The Fight Nobody Recorded
The man attacked first.
Kiana moved.
He was trained.
Very trained.
Unlike Logan, he did not underestimate her.
Their fight was fast and silent.
No crowd.
No phones.
No laughter.
Only technique.
He tried to control her wrist.
She escaped.
He attacked her legs.
She sprawled.
He transitioned.
She countered.
They crashed against the warehouse wall.
Kiana recognized his style.
“Where is my brother?”
He said nothing.
She trapped his arm.
“Where is Malcolm?”
He smiled.
“You're still protecting him.”
“Where is he?”
The man headbutted her.
Kiana staggered.
He escaped.
Then he said:
“He was never the target.”
Kiana froze.
“What?”
“You were.”
He disappeared into the darkness.
Kiana stood alone.
Her heart pounding.
The next morning, Daniel arrived.
Kiana told him everything.
Daniel looked devastated.
“Malcolm knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That they were interested in you.”
“Why?”
“Because of Spectre.”
Kiana shook her head.
“I left that life.”
Daniel looked at her.
“They didn't.”
The Truth About Spectre
Spectre had never been a nickname for a person.
It had been a role.
Kiana had been trained for situations where identity mattered more than rank.
She could disappear into crowds.
Read movement.
Predict aggression.
Control a stronger opponent without unnecessary injury.
Her instructors had taught her one principle:
Control before power.
Malcolm had been better.
Faster.
More fearless.
When the operation collapsed, Malcolm had chosen to disappear.
Not because he was dead.
Because he had discovered that someone inside their organization was selling information.
He had created the appearance of his death.
But he had left Kiana behind deliberately.
To protect her.
The problem was that the lie had eventually failed.
And Victor Hale had spent years searching for the evidence Malcolm had hidden.
That evidence was apparently connected to Kiana.
Daniel finally revealed the rest.
“Malcolm contacted me six months ago.”
Kiana stared at him.
“What did he say?”
“He said if you ever started hearing the name Spectre again, you should trust no one.”
“Not even you?”
Daniel nodded.
“Not even me.”
Kiana looked at him for a long moment.
Then she smiled sadly.
“That's exactly why I trust you.”
Logan's Choice
Logan discovered the truth by accident.
He found Victor's envelope.
Inside were photographs of Kiana.
Old photographs.
Military photographs.
Logan stared at them.
The woman in the images looked different.
Shorter hair.
Combat gear.
Hard eyes.
But unmistakably Kiana.
He confronted her.
“You lied.”
Kiana looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because people don't always deserve the truth.”
Logan looked at the photographs.
“Who are you?”
Kiana answered:
“Someone trying to leave the past behind.”
He was silent.
Then he asked:
“Are you dangerous?”
Kiana shook her head.
“Only when someone gives me a reason.”
Logan laughed weakly.
“I gave you one.”
“Yes.”
He looked ashamed.
“I thought you were weak.”
“I know.”
“I wanted everyone to laugh at you.”
“I know.”
Logan lowered his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Kiana didn't immediately forgive him.
She simply said:
“Then do something different.”
“What?”
“Stop people from becoming the version of you I met.”
Logan looked toward the academy.
For the first time, he understood what his obsession had nearly turned him into.
The Real Confrontation
Victor Hale returned to Whitmore on a Saturday.
He expected Kiana to come alone.
Instead, Daniel was waiting.
Logan was there too.
So were several students.
Nobody held a weapon.
Nobody shouted.
Coach Whitmore stood near the entrance.
Victor looked around.
“This isn't how this was supposed to happen.”
Kiana stepped forward.
“You're right.”
Victor smiled.
“You've become careless.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I've become tired.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“Where is Malcolm?”
Kiana stared at him.
“You tell me.”
Victor laughed.
“He trusted you.”
“He still does.”
Victor's eyes narrowed.
Then the lights in the academy turned on.
Malcolm stepped from the hallway.
Older.
Scarred.
But alive.
Kiana stopped breathing.
For seven years she had imagined this moment.
In every version, she had cried.
