"Cardiac arrest," he muttered to himself. Without a second of hesitation, Adrian locked his hands together, positioned the heel of his palm over the center of her chest, and began deep, rhythmic compressions. Stay alive, he thought, silently counting the beats. Stay alive.
A hundred feet away, sitting on a wooden bench overlooking the river, a woman was drinking her morning coffee. She had watched the jogger fall and saw a tall, broad-shouldered man instantly sprint over and drop to the ground, aggressively pushing down on the motionless woman's chest.
Panic seized her. Instead of running over to ask what had happened or if the man needed help, her mind jumped to the darkest conclusion. She fumbled in her purse, pulled out her phone, and dialed 911 with trembling hands.
"Help! Please, send police immediately!" she screamed into the receiver. "I'm at Riverside Park, near the north trail. There's a man... he's attacking a woman! He knocked her down and he's on top of her! Hurry!"
