Sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the peaceful morning air. Adrian heard them, but his entire focus was on the failing heart beneath his hands, entirely unaware that the sirens were coming for him.
Officers Greg Lawson and Daniel Cruz arrived on the scene with tires screeching. They sprinted from their cruiser, hands resting on their holsters. What they saw matched the frantic 911 dispatcher's description: a large man kneeling over a motionless woman, violently pushing down on her.
They didn't stop to assess the scene. They didn't see the perfect, rhythmic medical technique of chest compressions.
"Hey, get off her!" Officer Lawson barked, closing the distance. "Hands where I can see them!"
Adrian briefly looked up, sweat beading on his forehead, but he didn't break the rhythm of his compressions. If he stopped now, her brain would be starved of oxygen. "She's having a heart attack!" he shouted back frantically. "I'm a doctor. I'm giving her CPR!"
