"Back up!" Miller shouted back, his face contorted in rage as he maintained his grip on her lapels. "People like you don't walk into the judge's chambers! You listen to me when I'm speaking to you!"
Miller believed he was exerting complete dominance, entirely oblivious to the fact that his actions were being captured by multiple security cameras mounted along the hallway, as well as the horrified gazes of dozens of witnesses.
The confrontation at the doorway had attracted a crowd. Clerks, bailiffs, and junior attorneys gathered at a safe distance, whispering in hushed, nervous tones. Among them was Officer David Cole, a younger officer who had joined the force only two years prior. Unlike Miller, Cole represented a generation of officers who were growing increasingly disillusioned with the rampant abuse of power within their department.
Cole took a step forward, visibly uncomfortable with Miller's aggression. "Marcus, take it easy," Cole said quietly, trying to intervene without provoking his senior officer. "Let's just check her ID first."
"Stay out of this, Cole!" Miller snapped, not breaking eye contact with Evelyn. "She refused a lawful order to step back. She's resisting."
"I have refused nothing," Evelyn stated clearly, her voice echoing so everyone in the hallway could hear. "You failed to request identification, you initiated unprovoked physical force, and you are currently committing an unlawful assault under state law."
Miller let out a cruel chuckle. "You think you can teach me the law? I am the law in this building!"
While Miller remained blinded by his own ego, the heavy double doors at the end of the main hallway suddenly swung open. The sound of rhythmic, formal footsteps resonated across the polished floor. A silence instantly swept over the crowd as several figures emerged from the central rotunda.
At the front of the procession was Chief Presiding Judge Arthur Sterling, wearing his formal black judicial robes. Beside him walked Mayor Richard Davis, surrounded by senior city officials and members of the press who had been invited for a scheduled announcement. The atmosphere in the hallway shifted instantly from chaos to an impending reckoning.
