As Judge Sterling walked down the corridor, his pleasant demeanor instantly evaporated the moment his eyes landed on the scene unfolding outside his door. He saw Officer Miller pinning a woman against the wall, his hands clenched tightly around her suit jacket.
"What in the hell is going on here?!" Judge Sterling’s voice boomed across the hallway, shattering the tension like a thunderclap.
Miller immediately froze. Hearing the authoritative tone of the senior judge, he released his grip on Evelyn and quickly stepped back, instinctively smoothing down his uniform. He turned around, putting on a rehearsed look of dutiful professionalism, completely unaware of the catastrophe he had just orchestrated for himself.
"Your Honor!" Miller said quickly, attempting to control the narrative before anyone else could speak. "I apologize for the commotion. I caught this woman trying to breach your chambers without authorization. She was aggressive and refused to cooperate, so I had to physically restrain her for security reasons."
Judge Sterling stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with utter shock and disbelief. Beside him, Mayor Davis gasped, looking from Miller to the woman standing against the wall.
Evelyn calmly stepped forward, adjusting her suit jacket and straightening her lapels. She did not show a single sign of weakness or distress. She simply looked at Judge Sterling and offered a subtle, knowing nod.
The blood visibly drained from Officer Miller’s face as he watched Judge Sterling bypass him completely and walk directly toward the woman he had just shoved.
"Dr. Vance," Judge Sterling said, his voice laced with profound apology and deep respect. "Are you alright? I am deeply, deeply sorry you had to experience this."
"I am unhurt, Judge Sterling," Evelyn replied calmly, her tone steady. "Though it seems your department's retraining protocols are even more urgent than we anticipated."
Miller stood paralyzed, his mind racing as he tried to process the exchange. "Dr. Vance?" he stammered, his voice shaking. "Your Honor... who is this?"
