Chapter 1 - The Laughter He Had ForgottenMatthew Hayes stood in the doorway of his own dining room like a stranger looking into a life that should have belonged to him.

For a few seconds, he did not breathe.
The room he had built for important dinners, charity guests, business partners, and polished conversations no one ever remembered was no longer cold. The long walnut table was covered not with silver chargers or imported crystal, but with flour, paper napkins, crayons, mismatched bowls, and three plates of slightly burnt pancakes.
At the center of it all stood Olivia.
His housekeeper.
She wore the same gray uniform she always wore, though the sleeves were rolled to her elbows and flour dusted one side of her cheek. Her dark hair had slipped loose from its clip. She was holding a wooden spoon like a microphone, singing badly on purpose while Grace stood on a chair beside her, giggling so hard she could barely breathe.
Noah sat across from them, wearing one of Matthew’s old ties around his neck like a costume. A paper crown rested crookedly on his head.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Olivia announced in a grand voice, “King Noah the Brave has officially declared pancakes acceptable for dinner!”
“No!” Noah shouted, laughing. “Not acceptable. Legendary!”
Grace clapped both hands. “Legendary!”
Then Olivia bowed, dramatically, and the children exploded into laughter again.
Real laughter.
Wild, breathless, unguarded laughter.
The kind Matthew had not heard in that house since before Caroline died.
His hand tightened around the doorframe.
No one noticed him at first.
That hurt more than he expected.
For years, he had told himself his children were quiet because they were disciplined. Because the house was peaceful. Because they had everything they needed. Private tutors. Music lessons. The best toys money could order overnight. Bedrooms bigger than most apartments.
