“After one sentence too many.”
Mrs. Whitaker looked from him to Olivia, hatred flashing in her eyes.
“You’ll regret this,” she said.
Matthew did not move.
“No,” he replied. “I already regret waiting this long.”
The woman turned sharply and walked away, her shoes striking the marble like little gunshots.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Grace whispered, “Does this mean pancake night can stay?”
Matthew turned back.
The question was so innocent, so hopeful, it nearly broke him again.
He looked at the burnt pancakes. The flour. The syrup. The drawing still in his hand.
Then he loosened his tie, pulled off his jacket, and rolled up his sleeves.
“No,” he said.
Grace’s face fell.
Matthew reached for the bowl.
“It means I’m learning how to make them.”
Noah stared at him.
Olivia’s lips parted in surprise.
Matthew picked up the whisk like a man holding unfamiliar technology.
“So,” he said, looking at his children, “who teaches the billionaire how not to burn dinner?”
For the first time in years, Noah smiled at him without hesitation.
“I do,” his son said.
And as laughter returned to the room, Matthew did not know that upstairs, in a locked drawer Mrs. Whitaker had kept for years, there was a letter from Caroline Hayes.
A letter addressed to him.
