The answer pierced him.

Because she had not said it to impress him.

She had said it because it was true.

At that moment, footsteps sounded behind them.

Everyone turned.

Mrs. Whitaker, the head of household staff, stood in the hall with a silver tray in her hands and a look of thinly disguised outrage on her face.

Her eyes moved from the messy table to Olivia’s flour-streaked uniform, then to Grace in Matthew’s arms.

“This is inappropriate,” Mrs. Whitaker said coldly. “A housekeeper should know her place.”

The warmth in Matthew’s face vanished.

For years, he had allowed that woman to run his house like a museum.

Now he finally understood why his children had treated laughter like a forbidden thing.

Matthew slowly set Grace down.

Then he turned toward Mrs. Whitaker.

“No,” he said.

The word was quiet.

But it changed the entire room.

Mrs. Whitaker blinked. “Sir?”

Matthew stepped forward.

“You should know yours.”

Noah’s eyes widened.

Olivia went pale.

Mrs. Whitaker’s mouth tightened. “Mr. Hayes, I only meant—”

“You meant to shame the only person in this house who remembered my children were children.”

The tray in her hands trembled slightly.

Matthew looked at Olivia, then at Noah and Grace.

“For three years, I thought this house was being managed well,” he said. “Tonight I realize it was being kept silent.”

Mrs. Whitaker straightened. “Sir, your late wife preferred dignity in the home.”

Matthew’s expression changed.

The room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“Never use my wife’s name to defend cruelty.”

Mrs. Whitaker looked as if he had slapped her.

Matthew turned to his children.

“Did Mrs. Whitaker stop pancake nights before?”

Grace looked down.

Noah answered first.

“She said it made the dining room smell cheap.”

Matthew closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, the billionaire was gone.

The father remained.

“Mrs. Whitaker,” he said, “you will leave this house tonight.”

Olivia gasped softly.

The older woman’s face went white. “After fifteen years?”
