"Traffic wasn't bad."

Adrian walked toward her.

The entire room watched.

Marcus looked between them.

"You know her?"

Adrian laughed.

"I know exactly who she is."

The fighters grew curious.

Adrian extended his hand.

Elara shook it.

"Still planning to train tonight?"

"That's why I'm here."

"Good."

Adrian looked toward the mats.

"Change rooms are through there."

Elara picked up her bag.

As she walked away, Marcus leaned toward Adrian.

"Coach."

"Yeah?"

"You're sure about this?"

Adrian looked at Elara disappearing down the hallway.

"Very."

Marcus lowered his voice.

"She doesn't look like she can fight."

Adrian smiled.

"That's because you're looking at her."

He paused.

"You should be looking at everyone else."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

But Adrian had already turned away.

On the far side of the gym, a twenty-seven-year-old fighter named Damon Rusk had heard the exchange.

Damon was Iron Lotus's unofficial king.

He had won six amateur tournaments, trained professionally for two years, and was preparing for his first major promotion.

He was tall, muscular, handsome, and painfully aware of all three.

He watched Elara enter the changing room.

Then he laughed.

"Another one who thinks she can fight."

His training partner, Leon, smiled.

"Give her five minutes."

Damon shook his head.

"She won't last five."

Neither man noticed Adrian standing several feet behind them.

The coach's face had become serious.

Because Adrian knew something they didn't.

Elara Vance had not come to Iron Lotus to prove she belonged.

She had already proved it somewhere else.

She had simply come to decide whether Iron Lotus was worthy of her.

 The First Lesson

Twenty minutes later, Elara stepped onto the mats.

The gym had returned to its usual rhythm.

Heavy bags swung.

Gloves cracked.

Coaches shouted instructions.

But attention kept drifting toward the quiet woman in gray sweatpants.

Elara wrapped her hands slowly.

No flashy movements.

No unnecessary conversation.

She checked each knuckle.

Wrapped the wrist.

Adjusted the tape.

Then stood.

Damon watched from across the room.

He smirked.

"She wraps like a beginner."

Leon shrugged.

"Maybe she is."

Adrian called everyone together.

"Advanced class. Pair up."

The fighters moved.

Damon immediately partnered with Leon.

Others found their regular training partners.

Elara remained alone.

Adrian looked around.

"Damon."

Damon turned.

"Yeah?"

"You're with Elara."

A few people exchanged looks.

Damon laughed.

"You serious?"

"Very."

Damon walked toward Elara.

He looked down at her.

"Just so we're clear, I'm not going easy because you're new."

Elara nodded.

"I wouldn't want you to."

Damon smiled.

"Okay."

Adrian stepped closer.

"First round is technical sparring."

Damon raised an eyebrow.

"Technical?"

"Control your power. Focus on timing."

Damon nodded.

The timer sounded.

Damon moved forward.

He expected hesitation.

Instead, Elara shifted her weight.

Barely.

Damon threw a probing jab.

Elara moved her head two inches.

The punch missed.

Damon smiled.

"Fast."

He threw another.

She slipped.

Another.

She slipped again.

He kicked.

She stepped back.

Damon increased the pace.

Jab.

Cross.

Low kick.

Hook.

Elara moved around every strike as if she had already seen them.

Damon's smile disappeared.

The gym began to quiet.

Elara had not thrown a single punch.

She was simply watching.

Studying.

Waiting.

Damon attacked again.

This time he stepped forward aggressively.

Elara caught his wrist.

Pivoted.

And suddenly Damon was standing behind her with his balance compromised.

She released him.

No throw.

No humiliation.

Just a demonstration.

Damon stared.

"Again."

Elara nodded.

The timer restarted.

Damon attacked faster.

Elara countered faster.

A body shot.

A leg kick.

A failed takedown.

Each time, she seemed to know what was coming.

Then Damon made a mistake.

He became angry.

He threw a heavy right hand.

Elara ducked.

Her left hand touched his shoulder.

Her right foot stepped behind his.

She shifted her hips.

Damon hit the mat.

Hard.

The entire gym went silent.

Elara stepped back.

"Are you okay?"

Damon looked up.

His face was red.

"Again."

Adrian raised a hand.

"Enough."

Damon stood.

"I'm fine."

"Class isn't about your ego."

Damon clenched his jaw.

Elara returned to her position.

Adrian looked at the others.

"Everybody saw what happened."

Nobody spoke.

Adrian continued.

"Power without timing is noise."
