Adrian crossed his arms.

"That's called fighting."

A few people laughed.

Damon looked furious.

Then Adrian said something that changed the atmosphere.

"Elara, show them."

She looked at him.

"Show them what?"

"Enough."

She sighed.

Then removed the wooden pin from her hair.

Her brown hair fell around her shoulders.

She walked toward the center of the mat.

Adrian looked at the fighters.

"Who wants to volunteer?"

Nobody moved.

Finally, Leon raised his hand.

"I'll go."

Adrian nodded.

Leon was a strong wrestler, nearly ninety kilograms, with years of competition experience.

He stood opposite Elara.

"Same rules?"

"Controlled," Adrian said.

The timer began.

Leon shot forward.

Elara sprawled.

He tried again.

She redirected him.

He grabbed her waist.

She shifted her hips.

A moment later, Leon was on the mat.

He attempted a reversal.

She anticipated it.

She transitioned.

Then suddenly Leon was trapped in an arm triangle.

He tapped.

The gym went completely silent.

Leon sat up.

"What the hell?"

Elara offered him a hand.

He accepted.

"You've trained wrestling," he said.

"Yes."

"Jiu-jitsu?"

"Yes."

"Muay Thai?"

"Yes."

Damon stared at her.

"How long?"

Elara looked at him.

"Twenty-two years."

Someone actually dropped a water bottle.

Marcus whispered, "Twenty-two?"

Adrian smiled.

Elara continued.

"I started when I was twelve."

Damon's expression changed.

"Where?"

"Wherever I could."

"Who trained you?"

Elara's eyes briefly hardened.

"My father."

The room became quiet again.

"What happened to him?" Leon asked.

Elara looked toward the heavy bags.

"He died."

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stepped in.

"That's enough for tonight."

Elara nodded.

She gathered her things.

As she walked toward the changing room, Damon watched her.

For the first time, he wasn't angry.

He was curious.

And perhaps a little ashamed.

What Elara Had Been Running From

The following week, Elara became part of Iron Lotus.

She trained quietly.

She helped beginners.

She corrected footwork when asked.

She never demanded attention.

But people began seeking her advice.

Even Damon.

One evening, after most fighters had left, Damon found Elara sitting alone on the edge of the mat.

"You still here?"

"Yes."

He sat several feet away.

"I owe you an apology."

Elara looked at him.

"For what?"

"Tuesday."

"You apologized."

"No. I said I wasn't sorry."

She smiled slightly.

"That's different."

Damon rubbed his hands together.

"I thought you were weak."

"I know."

"I was wrong."

"I know that too."

He laughed.

"You're really difficult to talk to."

"So I've been told."

Damon became serious.

"Why did you come here?"

Elara looked down at her hands.

"For my father."

Damon waited.

"My father was a fighter."

"Professional?"

"Not famous."

She smiled.

"He didn't care about fame."

"What happened?"

"He owned a small gym."

Elara looked toward the empty heavy bags.

"Nothing like Iron Lotus. It was in a poor neighborhood. Kids came after school. My father trained them for free."

She paused.

"He believed fighting wasn't about becoming dangerous."

Damon listened.

"He said the purpose of martial arts was learning that you didn't have to prove you were dangerous."

Damon lowered his eyes.

"What happened to the gym?"

"Money."

Elara smiled sadly.

"Then illness."

Her father had died three years earlier.

After his death, Elara closed the gym.

She spent the next year traveling.

Training.

Competing.

Teaching.

But something had been missing.

Until she met Adrian.

"He knew my father," she explained.

Damon looked surprised.

"Coach?"

"They trained together years ago."

That explained the invitation.

Adrian hadn't invited Elara because he thought she needed a place to train.

He had invited her because he knew what she carried.

The next morning, Adrian called a meeting.

"I've got an announcement."

The fighters gathered.

Adrian stood in front of them.

"Next month, Iron Lotus will host the city's amateur combat showcase."

Everyone cheered.

Damon smiled.

Then Adrian continued.

"And Elara will represent us."

Elara looked up.

She hadn't expected it.

Damon grinned.

"You fighting?"

"Apparently."

"You nervous?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because winning isn't the point."

Damon smiled.

"What is?"

Elara looked around the gym.

"Showing people what discipline looks like."

The event arrived four weeks later.

The academy was packed.

Parents.

Fighters.

Coaches.

Local fans.

Elara's opponent was a twenty-six-year-old woman named Kara Benton.
