His eyes moved toward Damon.

"Strength without discipline is dangerous."

Then he looked at Elara.

"And skill without humility is worthless."

Damon looked away.

The rest of training continued.

But something had changed.

People were no longer laughing.

They were watching.

Elara worked through every drill without speaking.

She hit pads with precise combinations.

She practiced takedowns.

She moved through defensive transitions.

She never celebrated.

Never taunted.

Never looked around to see who was watching.

After class, Damon approached her.

"You trained before?"

Elara removed her gloves.

"A little."

"Where?"

"Different places."

"How long?"

She paused.

"Long enough."

Damon frowned.

"That's not an answer."

"It wasn't meant to be."

He stared at her.

Then walked away.

Adrian approached.

"You handled yourself well."

"I wasn't here to fight Damon."

"I know."

"Then why pair us?"

Adrian smiled.

"Because Damon needed the lesson."

Elara looked toward the heavy bags.

"He'll recover."

"I wasn't worried about his body."

Adrian became serious.

"I was worried about his attitude."

Elara nodded.

"That's harder to fix."

Adrian smiled.

"You understand."

She looked at him.

"More than I'd like."

There was something in her voice.

Something old.

Something painful.

Adrian noticed but did not ask.

Instead, he said, "Come back Thursday."

"I will."

As Elara picked up her bag, Adrian watched her leave.

Marcus approached.

"Coach."

"Yeah?"

"Who is she?"

Adrian looked through the glass doors.

Elara was already walking into the rain.

"You'll find out."

Marcus frowned.

"That sounds ominous."

Adrian smiled.

"It isn't ominous."

He looked at the fighters still cleaning the mats.

"It's an opportunity."

 The Challenge

By Thursday, Elara's presence had become the main topic of conversation at Iron Lotus.

She did not talk much.

That made people talk more.

Where had she trained?

Why had Adrian personally invited her?

Why did she move like that?

Why did she never seem tired?

Damon was particularly obsessed.

His pride had taken a wound.

And Damon Rusk was not good at leaving wounds alone.

During warm-ups, he watched Elara from across the room.

She was doing controlled footwork.

Nothing spectacular.

Nothing dramatic.

Yet her movement was so efficient that it irritated him.

Finally, he approached her.

"Want to spar?"

Elara looked at him.

"We sparred Tuesday."

"That wasn't sparring."

"It felt like sparring."

Damon smiled.

"You got lucky."

Elara said nothing.

Damon stepped closer.

"One hard round."

Adrian heard him.

"Damon."

Damon turned.

"What?"

"She's not your revenge project."

"I'm just asking."

Elara looked at Adrian.

Then back at Damon.

"One round is fine."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Technical."

Elara nodded.

Damon smiled.

"Of course."

The round began.

For the first thirty seconds, everything was controlled.

Then Damon landed a clean body kick.

Elara absorbed it.

She nodded.

"Good."

That single word irritated him.

He attacked again.

Elara blocked.

He pushed forward.

She retreated.

Damon threw a combination.

Elara countered.

He missed.

Again.

Missed.

Again.

Then Elara caught his kick.

Damon froze.

She swept his supporting leg.

He hit the mat.

He stood immediately.

"Again."

The second exchange lasted longer.

Damon began using feints.

Elara adjusted.

He changed levels.

She defended.

He tried to pressure her against the wall.

She slipped out.

The room became silent.

Nobody was laughing anymore.

Then Damon made the mistake of trying to prove something.

He charged.

Elara sidestepped.

She placed one hand against his chest.

Her other hand controlled his shoulder.

With almost no visible effort, she redirected his momentum.

Damon stumbled past her.

She could have struck him.

Instead, she stopped.

Damon turned.

"What are you doing?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

"For you to calm down."

Several fighters looked away to hide their smiles.

Damon's face hardened.

He attacked again.

Elara moved.

This time she swept his legs and controlled him on the mat.

Her knee stopped short of his chest.

Her hand controlled his wrist.

Damon struggled.

He couldn't move.

"Tap," Elara said.

Damon refused.

She waited.

He tried again.

Nothing.

"Tap."

His face reddened.

Finally, he tapped.

Elara immediately released him.

Damon rolled away.

The timer sounded.

Adrian walked over.

"Good round."

Damon stood.

"She cheated."

The gym froze.

Adrian stared at him.

"How?"

"She knew what I was doing."
