Chapter 9: The Sentence

Jake grunted, surprised by her sudden proximity. He tried to wrap his arms around her, but he couldn't get the leverage. She was too close, her center of gravity entirely beneath his.

"I told you to keep backing up," he hissed through his mouthguard, trying to muscle her backward.

Emma looked up at him. Her eyes were not angry, or scared, or even triumphant. They were simply resolute. The gym was dead silent now, the only sounds being Jake's heavy breathing and the squeak of his boots as he struggled to move her.

"I'm not backing up, Jake," Emma said, her voice clear and chillingly calm in the silent room. "I'm just deciding where to leave you."

Chapter 10: The Drop

Before Jake could process the sentence, the world tilted.

Emma moved with terrifying, practiced efficiency. She didn't use her strength; she used his. As Jake pushed forward to break her posture, she dropped her hips, wrapping her leg behind his lead knee.

With a subtle twist of her torso and a slight pull on his lapel, she redirected his entire two-hundred-and-twenty-pound frame.

Jake felt his feet leave the mat. For a split second, he was weightless, staring up at the fluorescent lights of the gym ceiling. Then, gravity asserted itself.

He hit the mat with a thunderous CRACK that echoed off the cinderblock walls. All the breath rushed out of his lungs in a violent whoosh.

Before he could even attempt to recover, Emma had transitioned seamlessly. She dropped her knee onto his sternum, pinning him to the floor, and locked his right arm in an armbar. She didn't hyperextend it; she just held it exactly at the breaking point.

Chapter 11: The Ringing Silence

The silence in the gym was absolute. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved.

Jake lay on his back, gasping for air, staring up at the woman who had just dismantled him without taking a single step backward. He could feel the pressure on his elbow joint. One millimeter more, and his arm would snap.

He looked into her eyes, expecting to see gloating or arrogance. Instead, he saw the exact same calm neutrality she had displayed on the bench before the fight. She wasn't fighting for ego. She was fighting because it was an equation, and she had just solved it.
