"Tap, Mercer," Instructor Harris said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the silence like a knife.

Jake swallowed hard. His pride screamed at him to fight out of it, to use his strength. But his body knew better. He slapped his free hand against the mat three times.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Chapter 12: A Bitter Pill

The moment he tapped, Emma released the pressure instantly. She didn't shove him or sneer. She simply stood up, stepped back, and offered him her hand.

Jake stared at her hand for a long moment. His chest heaved as his lungs finally found oxygen. The humiliation burned in his throat. He ignored her hand, rolling over and pushing himself up off the mat under his own power.

He didn't look at the crowd. He couldn't bear to see the expressions of the men who, just five minutes ago, had considered him untouchable. He grabbed his towel from the corner and walked out of the gym without saying a word.

Emma watched him go. She didn't celebrate. She turned back to Instructor Harris, her hands raised slightly. "Next rotation, Sergeant?"

Harris couldn't help but smile, a small, grim pulling of his lips. "Take five, Specialist. I think you've earned it."

Chapter 13: The Shift in Dynamics

Over the next few weeks, the atmosphere in the training center shifted dramatically. The loud, aggressive posturing that had once dominated the room faded. It was replaced by a more focused, technical intensity.

Emma became the gold standard. Soldiers didn't avoid her; they lined up to spar with her. They realized that getting thrown by Emma was a masterclass in physics and leverage. She dismantled everyone with the same quiet efficiency, pointing out flaws in their stance, their timing, and their balance.

She never raised her voice. She never insulted anyone. She just corrected them, methodically and physically.

Jake, on the other hand, was absent for the first week. When he finally returned, he was quiet. He lifted weights in the corner, keeping his head down. He watched Emma from afar, studying her movements. He was finally seeing what he had been too blind with arrogance to see before: pure, unadulterated skill.
