It took a month before Jake stepped onto the mat with her again.
The gym went quiet once more, anticipating a revenge match. Jake walked to the center, squaring up. But this time, his stance was different. He was balanced. His hands were high. There was no lazy, arrogant grin.
"Ready?" Emma asked softly.
"Ready," Jake replied.
The bell rang. Jake didn't rush in. He circled, probing with cautious jabs, respecting her space. He didn't tell her to back up. He knew better now.
They sparred for three full minutes. Jake didn't win, but he didn't end up on his back gasping for air, either. He fought technically, carefully. When the round ended, he was sweating profusely, but he was still standing.
Chapter 15: The New Benchmark
As the timer buzzed, Jake dropped his hands. He took a deep breath, looking at Emma.
"Your footwork," Emma said quietly, pulling out her mouthpiece. "It's better. You're not leaning over your lead knee anymore."
Jake nodded slowly. "Thanks. I... I realized I have a lot to learn."
It was the closest thing to an apology Jake Mercer had ever uttered in his life. Emma offered a small, barely perceptible nod in return.
"We all do," she said.
Jake finally extended his hand. This time, he wasn't trying to establish dominance; he was asking for respect. Emma took it, her grip firm and calloused.
The gym slowly returned to life around them, the sounds of hitting pads and grunting filling the air once more. But it was a different gym now. The quiet woman hadn't just beaten the biggest guy in the room; she had elevated the entire unit. She had shown them that true strength didn't roar. It whispered, and it never, ever backed up.
