“Again.”
He did.
“Again.”
He struck harder.
Elena shook her head.
“You're trying to prove something.”
Marcus lowered his hands.
“To whom?”
“To yourself.”
The room became quiet.
Marcus felt irritation rise in his chest.
He had come here to train, not to be psychoanalyzed by a woman who had barely spoken to him.
Elena turned away.
“That's enough for now.”
Marcus watched her walk toward another student.
He didn't know it yet, but that moment was the beginning of a lesson that would take him months to understand.
And by the end of the night, his black belt would mean something very different to him.
The Challenge
The incident happened forty minutes later.
Advanced training had become more intense.
Students were rotating through controlled sparring rounds. Elena moved between them, correcting technique with short, precise instructions.
Marcus had already defeated three partners.
Not easily.
But convincingly.
His confidence returned.
He watched Elena demonstrate a counter against an experienced grappler named Thomas.
The movement was almost impossible to follow.
Thomas attacked.
Elena redirected his momentum, stepped outside his line, controlled his wrist, and put him onto the mat before anyone could understand what had happened.
She released him immediately.
“Again,” she said.
Thomas nodded.
The second attempt ended the same way.
Marcus smiled.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
But he wasn't convinced.
Speed was one thing.
Technique was another.
Marcus believed combat was ultimately about pressure.
He had spent years learning how to remain calm when exhausted, hurt, or frightened.
He wanted to know if Elena could do the same.
When the next rotation was announced, Marcus stepped forward.
“I'll go.”
Elena looked at him.
“Fine.”
They faced each other.
Marcus bowed.
Elena bowed back.
“Light contact,” she said.
Marcus nodded.
The timer started.
For the first ten seconds, nothing happened.
Marcus moved carefully.
Elena stood almost completely still.
Her hands were relaxed.
Her breathing was slow.
Marcus feinted.
Nothing.
He stepped forward.
Elena shifted one inch.
That was all.
Marcus threw a quick jab.
She slipped it.
He followed with a low kick.
She moved just beyond its range.
Marcus attacked again.
Jab.
Cross.
Hook.
Low kick.
Elena avoided everything.
Not by retreating.
By moving only as much as necessary.
Marcus felt his confidence disappear.
He increased the pressure.
Elena blocked.
He attacked again.
She redirected.
He attempted a takedown.
Elena sprawled before his hands even reached her hips.
Marcus stopped.
Elena looked at him.
“You're rushing.”
He smiled.
“I'm warming up.”
“You're angry.”
“No.”
“You are.”
Marcus attacked again.
This time, Elena caught his wrist.
For a fraction of a second, Marcus felt something impossible.
He wasn't being pushed.
He wasn't being pulled.
He was simply being guided.
His own momentum carried him past her.
Elena released him.
Marcus stumbled two steps.
The room became silent.
Someone whispered.
Marcus turned.
“I slipped.”
Elena nodded.
“Of course.”
The calmness in her voice irritated him more than an insult would have.
He attacked again.
This time harder.
Elena moved.
Marcus missed.
His foot landed awkwardly.
Elena touched his shoulder.
“Stop.”
Marcus froze.
The timer had not sounded.
“Why?”
“Because you're no longer training.”
“I am.”
“No. You're trying to win.”
Marcus stared at her.
“And what's wrong with that?”
“Nothing.”
Elena stepped backward.
“But if you need to win during practice, you will eventually lose when it matters.”
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
“You don't know me.”
“I know enough.”
She turned away.
Marcus heard laughter from somewhere behind him.
That was the final spark.
“Then fight me properly.”
Elena stopped.
The entire room went quiet.
Daniel Price looked at Marcus.
“Marcus.”
But Marcus continued.
“You said I'm angry. Fine. Let's see what happens.”
Elena slowly turned around.
Her expression had changed.
Not dramatically.
There was no anger.
No fear.
Only disappointment.
She walked toward him.
“Last warning.”
Marcus smiled.
“What?”
“Last warning,” she repeated. “Walk away.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn't come here to walk away.”
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
“Then understand something. If we continue, I won't be teaching you.”
Marcus swallowed.
“What will you be doing?”
“Showing you the difference between being dangerous and being experienced.”
