A few students stepped away from the mat.

Daniel moved closer.

“Elena—”

She raised one hand.

“It's his choice.”

Marcus nodded.

“My choice.”

Elena sighed.

“Very well.”

The timer started.

Marcus attacked.

He moved faster than before.

His first punch was designed to force a reaction.

Elena didn't give him one.

His second attack came immediately.

Still nothing.

Then Elena stepped forward.

Marcus suddenly realized that she had entered his range.

He tried to adjust.

Too late.

She touched his chest with two fingers.

“Point.”

Marcus blinked.

He attacked again.

Another touch.

Another.

Again.

Another.

He couldn't hit her.

She wasn't overpowering him.

She wasn't even appearing to fight him.

She was simply always where he wasn't.

After thirty seconds, Marcus was breathing heavily.

Elena wasn't.

After forty-five seconds, he finally caught her arm.

His heart jumped.

Got you.

He attempted a takedown.

Elena rotated.

Marcus lost balance.

The next thing he knew, he was on the mat.

Elena had one knee beside his shoulder and his wrist controlled.

She hadn't injured him.

She hadn't even used force.

She had simply removed every option he had.

“Tap,” she said.

Marcus refused.

He tried to escape.

Elena adjusted.

His shoulder tightened.

“Tap.”

He resisted.

Elena applied slightly more pressure.

Marcus finally tapped.

The room was completely silent.

Elena released him immediately.

Marcus stood.

His face burned.

She looked at him.

“Now you understand.”

Marcus stared back.

“No.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“I understand that you got me once.”

She shook her head.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

She pointed toward the exit.

“Tomorrow morning. Six o'clock.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if you want to challenge me, you need to learn what you're challenging.”

Then she walked away.

Marcus stood alone on the mat.

For the first time in years, his black belt felt heavy.

 Six O'Clock

Marcus almost didn't return.

At 5:20 the next morning, he sat in his car outside Iron Vale.

Rainwater ran down the windshield.

He could leave.

Nobody would know.

Except himself.

At 5:47, he walked inside.

The academy was nearly empty.

Elena was already there.

She was sitting on the edge of the mat, drinking coffee.

She looked at him.

“You came.”

Marcus shrugged.

“You told me to.”

“No. You told yourself to.”

He ignored the comment.

“What are we doing?”

“Nothing.”

Marcus frowned.

“Nothing?”

“Sit.”

For the next twenty minutes, Elena made him sit.

No stretching.

No punching.

No grappling.

Nothing.

Marcus became increasingly impatient.

Finally, he asked, “Are we going to train?”

“We are training.”

“How?”

“By learning whether you can remain still.”

Marcus laughed.

“I can remain still.”

Elena pointed at the clock.

“Then do it.”

Five minutes later, Marcus shifted.

“Why did you move?”

“My leg fell asleep.”

“That's not why.”

He looked at her.

She continued.

“You moved because silence makes you uncomfortable.”

Marcus said nothing.

Elena stood.

“Come with me.”

She led him outside.

The city was beginning to wake.

They walked several blocks without speaking.

At a small intersection, Elena stopped.

“Watch.”

A cyclist passed.

A delivery truck turned the corner.

A woman crossed the street while looking at her phone.

A dog barked.

Nothing happened.

“What am I supposed to see?” Marcus asked.

“Everything.”

She looked at him.

“You think combat begins when someone throws a punch.”

Marcus remained silent.

“It begins much earlier.”

She pointed toward the street.

“Look at the man in the blue jacket.”

Marcus saw him.

“What about him?”

“He keeps checking the same parked car.”

Marcus watched.

The man did it again.

Elena continued walking.

“Look at the woman with the red bag.”

Marcus found her.

“She is carrying her purse on the wrong shoulder.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

Elena smiled.

“That is the point. Don't invent threats.”

Marcus followed.

“Then what are you teaching me?”

“Observation.”

They returned to the academy two hours later.

Training began.

But it wasn't what Marcus expected.

Elena made him practice footwork for an hour.

Then breathing.

Then balance.

Then reaction drills.

Then controlled grappling with eyes partially covered.

Every time Marcus tried to rely on strength, Elena stopped him.

Every time he rushed, she stopped him.

Every time he became frustrated, she made him repeat the exercise.

Days became weeks.

Marcus began arriving before sunrise.

He trained with Elena every morning.
