“No.”

“Then what?”

“I think you might win.”

Marcus was confused.

“Then why say no?”

“Because that's exactly what he wants.”

She folded the paper.

“He doesn't care about you. He wants to use your pride to drag me back into the past.”

Marcus looked down.

For the first time, he understood the real test.

It wasn't whether he could fight.

It was whether he could choose not to.

 The Last Warning

Marcus declined the challenge.

Viktor responded exactly as Elena expected.

He began spreading rumors.

He claimed Elena had lost her edge.

He claimed Iron Vale was hiding behind reputation.

He claimed Marcus had been afraid to fight him.

Within days, people were talking.

Students began asking questions.

Some wanted Marcus to accept.

Others wanted Elena to return to competition.

The academy's atmosphere changed.

Marcus struggled with it.

One evening, he found Elena alone in the training hall.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because knowing isn't the same as experiencing.”

Marcus sat down.

“I want to fight him.”

“I know.”

“I could beat him.”

“Maybe.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You don't sound convinced.”

“I am convinced that beating him wouldn't solve anything.”

Marcus sighed.

“What if he comes here?”

Elena looked toward the door.

“He will.”

The next morning, Viktor arrived.

This time, he brought three fighters with him.

The academy became silent.

Viktor stood in the center.

“I came to finish something.”

Elena walked forward.

“You're not welcome here.”

Viktor smiled.

“You've become soft.”

“No.”

“You teach people to retreat.”

“I teach them to survive.”

“Same thing.”

Elena looked at him.

“Leave.”

Viktor laughed.

“Last warning?”

The phrase echoed through the room.

Marcus remembered the night Elena had said those words to him.

Last warning.

Walk away.

Viktor stepped closer.

“I know who you are, Elena.”

She didn't move.

“And so do I.”

The first fighter stepped onto the mat.

Marcus recognized him.

A former professional kickboxer.

The second was a grappling champion.

The third was an enormous man whose reputation Marcus knew from underground circuits.

Viktor looked at the students.

“One of you.”

Nobody moved.

Marcus stepped forward.

Elena blocked him.

“No.”

Marcus looked at her.

“He came here to provoke us.”

“I know.”

“Then let me handle it.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you finally learned the lesson.”

Marcus stopped.

Elena walked onto the mat.

“I'll fight.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Viktor smiled.

“There she is.”

Elena removed her jacket.

“Three rounds.”

Viktor nodded.

The first fighter stepped forward.

The timer began.

He attacked aggressively.

Elena barely moved.

She avoided his strikes.

He became frustrated.

He attacked harder.

Elena redirected him.

Within thirty seconds, he was on the ground.

She released him.

The second fighter entered.

He attempted to grapple.

Elena countered.

He tried again.

She escaped.

Again.

Again.

Finally, she trapped his arm and forced him to tap.

The third fighter looked nervous.

Viktor said something quietly to him.

The man stepped forward.

This fight was different.

He was stronger.

Faster.

More disciplined.

He landed a glancing strike against Elena's shoulder.

Marcus saw it.

Elena staggered.

For a moment, the old Elena appeared.

The fighter attacked.

She countered.

The exchange became violent.

Marcus watched in disbelief.

Elena was no longer teaching.

She was fighting.

The fighter rushed.

Elena dropped him.

Hard.

The room went silent.

She stood over him.

Her breathing was heavy.

Viktor smiled.

“There you are.”

Elena looked at her hands.

Then at the man on the mat.

She stepped back.

“I won't become her again.”

Viktor's smile disappeared.

“What?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“You came here expecting me to prove that I am still dangerous.”

She shook her head.

“I don't need to prove that.”

Then she walked away.

The fight was over.

But Viktor wasn't satisfied.

He stepped toward Marcus.

“You see?”

Marcus stared at him.

“You're trying to make us angry.”

Viktor smiled.

“It's easy.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

For the first time, Viktor looked uncertain.

Because Marcus had finally understood what Elena had been teaching him.

The strongest person in the room was not always the person capable of causing the most damage.

Sometimes it was the person who had the power to cause damage and chose not to.

 The Master

The confrontation should have ended there.

It didn't.

Viktor returned two weeks later.
