The courtroom was gripped in a deathly silence, waiting for the judge's next directive. Maddox stared at the back of the old man’s head. A violent, uncontrollable flush of red crept up Maddox's thick neck, coloring his square jaw. His jaw muscles feathered; his eyes widened into a manic, unblinking glare. The humiliation was a physical fire burning in his veins. He, a decorated officer of the law, was being publicly dismantled by a man he viewed with nothing but sheer contempt.

The snap, when it came, was terrifyingly fast.

The agonizing silence of the room was violently shattered by the loud, abrasive scrape of wooden chair legs against the polished floor. Maddox lunged upward, his heavy boots slamming into the floorboards. In one fluid, frantic motion driven by pure, unfiltered rage, his hands dropped to his duty belt. The unmistakable, metallic clack of a leather holster being unclasped echoed through the high-ceilinged room like a thunderclap.

Gasps erupted from the gallery behind them, but the old man did not flinch.

Maddox drew his black semi-automatic service weapon, crossing the short distance between the tables in two massive strides. He brought the barrel up, his arm shaking with adrenaline and raw fury, and leveled it directly at the side of the elderly lawyer's head. The contrast was horrifying: the cold, black steel of the weapon juxtaposed against the soft, silver curls and the deep burgundy shoulder of the old man's suit.

Maddox leaned down, his face entirely flushed, spit flying from his lips as his voice cracked with a psychotic, terrifying edge.

"Let's see how smart you are now, old man."

The words hung in the air, a lethal promise that brought the entire courtroom to a frozen, horrified standstill. The breaking point had been reached, and the line between the law and murder had just been erased.

The steel barrel of the service weapon was inches from the elderly lawyer's temple, yet the air around him seemed to freeze into absolute stillness. For a younger man, the proximity of death would invoke a primal, chaotic panic—a flinching of the neck, a widening of the eyes, a desperate plea for mercy. But the old man in the deep burgundy suit did not move. He did not even blink.
