"Stay back, this isn't FBI business!"

"It is now," the Federal Agent’s eyes seemed to say, though his mouth remained tightly shut. He did not blink. He did not shift his stance. His finger rested millimeters from the trigger, applying the exact amount of pressure needed before the break. He was a statue of lethal intent.

The psychological warfare lasted only a few agonizing seconds, but it felt like hours. Maddox looked at the unwavering black muzzle of the agent’s gun. He looked at the gleaming federal badge. Then, his eyes flicked up to Judge Carson, who was still standing tall in his navy blue robe, glaring down with uncompromising judgment.

Maddox was entirely isolated. The adrenaline began to curdle into sheer, paralyzing terror. He realized that pulling the trigger would mean his own immediate death. The heavy, dark olive green uniform suddenly seemed too large for him, weighing him down like a shroud.

Slowly, agonizingly, the defiance drained from Maddox's posture. His shoulders slumped. His hand began to tremble violently. The gun lowered, inch by inch, until it was pointed at the floorboards. With a defeated, hollow gasp, he opened his fingers.

The heavy firearm hit the wooden floor with a loud, metallic clatter that signaled the end of his reign of terror. Almost instantly, two court bailiffs tackled Maddox from behind, driving his olive green shoulder heavily into the polished wood, pinning his arms behind his back, and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

The immediate threat neutralized, a collective, ragged breath escaped the gallery. Judge Carson slowly lowered his gavel, sinking back into his leather chair, the red tie shifting slightly against his white collar as he ordered the courtroom cleared.

At the defense table, the elderly lawyer finally moved. He took a slow, deep breath, adjusting the cuffs of his pale yellow shirt, his deep burgundy suit unwrinkled despite the brush with death. He looked up, his weathered face breaking into a very faint, proud smile.
