But the memory struck him.

The beast's eyes widened. The mindless, feral glow flickered, interrupted by a sudden, jarring spike of confusion. Ranger dug his massive claws into the sand, desperately trying to halt his own momentum. The physical force of his sudden stop sent a tidal wave of coarse sand washing over Elian, blinding him momentarily and knocking him backward.

The beast slid to a halt mere inches from the boy.

The silence in the Colosseum was absolute. It was a suffocating, heavy quiet, born of total incomprehension. A hundred thousand people held their breath, waiting for the blood to spray, waiting for the boy to be torn apart.

It didn't happen.

Ranger stood over Elian, his massive chest heaving like a bellows. Saliva dripped from his steel-capped teeth, sizzling against the hot sand. The arcane collar around his neck pulsed frantically, hissing as it tried to pump more rage-inducing chemicals into his veins, but the beast fought it. His massive head twitched. A low, agonizing whine escaped his throat—a sound that did not belong in a gladiatorial arena.

Elian slowly reached his hands up to wipe the sand from his eyes. He didn't scramble backward. He didn't cower. He looked up into the ruined, tortured face of the monster.

"You remember, don't you?" Elian said softly.

He reached out a small, trembling hand.

Up in the stands, the Overseer's face turned purple with rage. This was a disruption of the spectacle. This was defiance. He slammed his fist onto the control panel of his podium, activating the maximum voltage of the beast's shock collar.

A crackle of blue lightning arced across Ranger's neck. The beast roared—not in rage, but in pure, unadulterated agony. The sheer force of the electrical current brought the giant creature to its knees, causing the ground to tremble. Ranger thrashed violently, his heavy claws gouging deep trenches into the sand as he tried to tear the iron collar from his own throat, ripping his own flesh in the process.

The crowd erupted into confused, angry shouts. This wasn't the show they had paid for.

Elian felt the beast's pain as if a burning brand had been pressed against his own skin. He gasped, clutching his chest, but he refused to step back. His empathy was not just a passive window into the souls of others; it was a conduit, a two-way bridge.

Elian surged forward, throwing himself against the beast's massive, armored neck. He ignored the residual electrical shocks that bit into his arms and chest. He pressed his forehead against Ranger's coarse, matted fur, directly beneath the heavy iron plating.

"I've got you. I'm here,"Elian yelled over the roar of the crowd and the crackle of the collar.

He pushed every ounce of his magic into the beast. He didn't try to calm the pain; he shared it, dividing the agony between them so that Ranger wouldn't have to bear it alone. He flooded their shared mental link with feelings of absolute safety, unconditional love, and the quiet peace of their childhood home.
