Ranger stopped thrashing.

Despite the lethal voltage still pouring through the collar, the beast went incredibly still. The massive, pupil-less eyes slowly shifted, focusing entirely on the small boy clinging to his neck. For the first time in five years, the heavy, dark fog of the Empire's alchemy broke, revealing the soul of the loyal companion trapped beneath the armor. Ranger let out a soft, shuddering breath that smelled of ozone and blood, and gently, so gently, rested his massive chin against Elian's shoulder.

High above, the Overseer slammed his fist on the control panel again, screaming at the guards. "Kill them! Kill the beast and the boy! Send in the executioners!"

Heavy iron gates all around the perimeter of the arena began to grind open. Dozens of heavily armored Imperial executioners marched into the sand. They were clad in obsidian plate armor, carrying long, electrified halberds designed to subdue rogue monsters. The crowd, sensing the escalation, began to cheer again, their bloodlust reignited by the promise of a massacre.

Elian looked at the approaching line of executioners. He was exhausted, his magic draining his physical strength, but he did not let go of Ranger.

He looked at the arcane collar around the beast's neck. The locking mechanism was complex, protected by layers of alchemical locks, but the magical energy pulsing through it was something Elian could feel. It resonated with the same frequency as the pain he had just absorbed.

Elian placed both of his hands on the glowing purple gemstone at the center of the collar.

"They don't own you," Elian whispered. "They never owned you."

He didn't use a key. He didn't use strength. He used his empathy, finding the violent, chaotic magic within the gemstone and pushing against it with a wave of absolute, unyielding calm. The gemstone flickered. The violet light turned erratic, shifting to a dull, angry red before cracking straight down the middle.

The collar hissed, releasing a cloud of foul-smelling steam, and then fell away, hitting the sand with a heavy, dead thud.

Ranger shook his massive head, the thick silver fur standing on end. He took a deep breath, filling his massive lungs with air that wasn't tainted by the chemical injectors for the first time in half a decade. He looked at the shattered collar in the sand, then looked at Elian.

The beast didn't roar. He simply nudged Elian gently with his snout, a gesture of profound, heartbreaking tenderness that completely contradicted his terrifying appearance.

Then, Ranger turned to face the approaching executioners.

The beast's posture changed entirely. The mindless, feral aggression was gone. In its place was something far more dangerous: the calculated, protective fury of an apex predator defending its pack. Ranger's lips peeled back, exposing his steel-capped teeth in a silent snarl. His eyes, free from the chemical haze, locked onto the Imperial guards with terrifying, intelligent precision.
