"Hold the line!" the captain of the executioners yelled, his voice cracking slightly as the reality of facing a fully cognizant, uncollared battle-beast set in. The guards lowered their electrified halberds, forming a wall of jagged steel and crackling energy.

Elian took a step back, his heart pounding in his chest. "Ranger," he said, his voice trembling but clear. "Show them."

Ranger moved.

He didn't charge blindly like the mindless monster the Empire had created. He moved with a terrifying, fluid grace, a blur of silver fur and dark iron plating. He hit the left flank of the executioners' line before they even had time to brace their weapons. The impact sounded like a siege engine striking a fortress wall. Three armored guards were thrown into the air like discarded dolls, their shields shattering upon impact.

The crowd went dead silent once more, watching in stunned disbelief as their unbeatable champion dismantled the elite Imperial guard with surgical precision.

Ranger ducked beneath the swing of an electrified halberd, his massive jaws snapping shut around the wooden haft, crushing it to splinters. He spun, using his heavily armored tail to sweep the legs out from under two more guards. He didn't kill them—a testament to the control he had regained over his own mind—but he incapacitated them with bone-shattering force, tossing them aside to clear a path.

The Overseer screamed in panic, realizing that the beast was not just fighting back; it was looking for an exit. "Close the upper gates! Fire the ballistas! Do not let them reach the walls!"

From the higher tiers of the arena, massive mounted crossbows swiveled, taking aim at the beast. Heavy iron bolts, thick as a man's arm, rained down into the sand.

Ranger bounded across the arena, moving in a jagged, unpredictable zigzag to avoid the incoming fire. He circled back to Elian, grabbing the back of the boy's tunic in his massive jaws, lifting him effortlessly from the ground, and tossing him onto his broad, armored back.

Elian grabbed handfuls of thick silver fur, pressing himself flat against the cold iron plating bolted to Ranger's spine. The beast's muscles bunched beneath him, a powerhouse of kinetic energy.

"Hold on,"Ranger's voice echoed in Elian's mind—not a spoken word, but a deep, resonant emotion transmitted through their empathic bond. It was a feeling of unbreakable resolve and absolute loyalty.

Ranger didn't run for the heavily fortified ground-level tunnels. Instead, he sprinted straight toward the sheer, thirty-foot vertical wall that separated the arena floor from the first tier of the spectator stands.

"He's going to jump!" a guard screamed, scrambling backward.

Ranger hit the base of the wall with staggering momentum. His steel-reinforced claws dug deep into the ancient stone blocks, tearing chunks of masonry away as he launched himself upward. He scrambled up the sheer face of the wall, moving with an agility that defied his massive bulk. The crowd in the lower tiers screamed in absolute terror, scrambling over one another to get away from the edge.
