The afternoon sun cut through the tall, dusty windows of the municipal courthouse, casting long, sharp blades of light across the worn oak benches and the linoleum floor that had seen decades of quiet grief and desperate pleas. Outside, the city hummed with its usual indifferent roar of traffic and sirens, but inside, the air was heavy, almost suffocating, as if the room itself were holding its breath.

Leo stood near the defense table, his knuckles pressed hard against the scarred wooden surface until his skin turned a pale, bloodless ivory. He was only seventeen, but the weight of a ruined decade had carved hollows beneath his dark, sleepless eyes and hardened the line of his jaw far beyond his years. Beside him sat Toby, nine years old, his small frame curled inward like a frightened sparrow. Toby’s fingers were tightly tangled in the frayed fabric of Leo’s oversized jacket, his face buried against his older brother’s arm, seeking whatever invisible shield Leo could still manage to provide.

At the front of the room, a woman walked slowly down the center aisle. Her footsteps made a soft, rhythmic clicking against the floor, each step measured as though she were walking on thin ice. She wore a simple, dark wool coat that looked weather-beaten, and her silver-streaked hair was pulled back into a loose, unpretentious knot. There was nothing commanding about her presence—no official badge, no legal portfolio, no intimidating posture of authority. Yet, the entire courtroom seemed to tilt slightly on its axis as she approached the railing that separated the gallery from the well of the court.
