“Then why didn’t she come back?” Leo shouted, the sound echoing off the high ceiling of the courtroom, startling Toby into a sharp gasp of fright. “If she was alive, if she was out there, why didn't she ever come back for us? Did she just get tired of hiding? Did she decide we weren't worth the trouble?”

Margaret didn't yell back. She didn't try to defend herself. Instead, she slowly turned her head and looked toward the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom—the doors that led out into the long, sterile corridor of the municipal building.

“Because,” Margaret said, her voice dropping to a whisper so profound that everyone in the room leaned in to catch it, “she thought you were safer believing she was dead.”

Silence fell over the courtroom, heavy and absolute. Even the hum of the fluorescent lights seemed to die down. Toby lifted his head fully from Leo’s arm, his small brow furrowed in a confusion that was heartbreaking to witness. He reached up, tugging gently on Leo’s sleeve.

“Leo?” the boy whispered, his voice trembling. “Is Mommy really outside?”

Before anyone could answer—before the judge could gavel for order or the social worker could step in to intervene—the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom slowly creaked open.

A shaft of pale afternoon light spilled across the back row of benches, and framed within that light stood a woman. She was painfully thin, her coat hanging loosely over a frame that looked as though a strong gust of wind might blow it away. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, and she was trembling from head to toe, as if standing against an invisible gale.
