Leo stopped breathing. The ambient noise of the room vanished, replaced by the rushing sound of blood in his ears. Time seemed to stretch, bending backward across ten long, agonizing years. He didn’t need to see her face clearly to know. He knew the slope of those shoulders. He knew the way she held her breath when she was afraid. Most of all, he remembered those eyes—dark, luminous, and haunted by a sorrow that no child should ever have to recognize in their mother.

His mother took one step forward across the threshold, her shoe clicking softly against the marble floor.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, the words carrying across the entire length of the room, fragile and broken with a lifetime of pent-up remorse.

The courtroom waited for the explosion. They expected the boy to run to her, to throw his arms around her neck, to weep into her shoulder the way children do when they are finally reunited with the center of their universe.

Leo didn’t run. He didn’t take a single step forward. Instead, he tightened his arm around his little brother, pulling Toby fiercely against his side as if shielding him from a sudden physical blow. His eyes locked onto hers, burning with a mixture of raw longing and cold, unyielding suspicion.

The silence stretched on, heavy and unbearable, until Leo finally broke it. His voice wasn't loud this time; it was quiet, steady, and terrifyingly cold, asking the question that instantly silenced the entire courtroom and froze everyone in their tracks:
