PART ONE — THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A TRIAL

Margaret Whitmore was searching for her son when she heard a woman laughing behind the carved wooden doors of the Grand Hawthorne Hotel’s private library.

The ceremony was supposed to begin in twenty minutes.

Nearly four hundred guests were already seated inside the ballroom beneath crystal chandeliers and thousands of white roses.

Business leaders, senators, judges, television reporters, and some of the wealthiest families in Boston had gathered to watch Alexander Whitmore marry Vanessa Caldwell.

The newspapers called it the wedding of the decade.

Margaret almost kept walking.

Then she recognized Vanessa’s voice.

“Daniel, we don’t have much time.”

Margaret stopped.

Daniel was not the groom.

Her son’s name was Alexander.

Slowly, she approached the partially open door.

What she saw inside nearly caused her to collapse.

Vanessa stood against a wall of leather-bound books with her arms wrapped around a man in a black suit.

Her veil had been pushed aside.

One hand rested beneath his jacket.

The diamond bracelet Alexander had given her that morning glittered on her wrist as she kissed the stranger.

Margaret covered her mouth.

The man pulled away just far enough to speak.

“After today, Whitmore Holdings will finally be ours.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Alexander trusts me completely.”

“And the transfer?”

“He signs it after the ceremony. His lawyer thinks it’s only a marriage trust.”

“What if he reads it?”

“He never reads anything emotional. He signs and lets his attorneys argue later.”

Margaret’s blood turned cold.

Her son was not merely being betrayed.

He was being robbed.

She backed away before they could see her, lifted the hem of her dark blue gown, and ran down the marble hallway.

Guests turned as she passed.

A waiter nearly dropped a tray of champagne.

Margaret did not stop until she found Alexander near the ballroom entrance with his best man, attorney James Porter.
