“You could have returned her,” Margaret whispered.
“And lose the only witness who could destroy your husband’s legacy?”
Emily grabbed Alexander’s arm.
“He isn’t telling you everything.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“They moved me here yesterday,” Emily continued. “Someone wanted me dead before the wedding ended.”
“Who?” Alexander asked.
She looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa backed away.
“I didn’t know she was here.”
“Not Vanessa.”
Emily turned toward Margaret.
“The woman who ordered the injection was your mother.”
Margaret froze.
“My mother died ten years ago.”
Footsteps approached through the corridor.
An elderly woman entered holding a syringe.
Margaret recognized her immediately.
Evelyn Harcourt.
Her mother.
The former judge whose funeral had filled an entire cathedral.
Evelyn looked at Margaret and smiled.
“Apparently,” she said, “this family has buried many people who were still alive.”
