“No,” Vanessa said.
The room fell silent again.
“Jonathan Whitmore did not found it.”
Margaret stared at her.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom entrance.
An elderly man stood there in a dark overcoat.
Margaret recognized him immediately.
Her champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered against the floor.
Nathan Whitmore.
Jonathan’s younger brother.
The man accused of stealing millions from the company twenty-eight years earlier.
The man believed to have died overseas.
Margaret had attended his memorial.
Alexander stared at him.
“You’re alive.”
Nathan walked slowly toward the altar.
“And Whitmore Holdings belongs to me.”
Alexander’s attorneys moved closer.
Nathan raised a sealed document.
“Your father built his empire using patents, property, and investment accounts he stole from me.”
Margaret shook her head.
“That is a lie.”
Nathan looked at her with something colder than anger.
“Ask your son why Jonathan left a sealed confession.”
Alexander’s expression remained controlled, but Margaret saw the tension in his jaw.
“You knew about this?”
“I found the confession six weeks ago.”
That was the same week Alexander discovered Vanessa’s affair.
The two betrayals had begun at the same time.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Margaret asked.
“Because the confession was incomplete.”
Nathan held up a page.
“I have the missing section.”
Senator Caldwell smiled for the first time since the agents entered.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You worked with my father?”
Nathan did not answer.
Alexander stepped down from the altar.
“What do you want?”
“The company.”
“And if I refuse?”
Nathan looked toward Margaret.
“Then your mother learns what Jonathan did on the night your daughter disappeared.”
Margaret stopped breathing.
Alexander had been seven when his five-year-old sister, Emily, vanished from the Whitmore estate.
Police believed she wandered into the river during a storm.
Her body was never found.
Margaret had spent twenty-five years imagining her daughter alone in dark water.
“You know what happened to Emily?”
