Ethan read quickly.
“This gives Vale Holdings conditional rights to our patents.”
Samuel nodded.
“Under specific circumstances.”
“What circumstances?”
“If Harrison Global breached certain financial covenants.”
Ethan looked up.
“That is exactly what's happening now.”
Samuel said nothing.
Ethan continued reading.
Then his expression hardened.
“This agreement was canceled.”
“It was supposed to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your father signed a termination document.”
“Where is it?”
Samuel pointed to another drawer.
Ethan found the termination agreement.
It had never been filed.
Ethan looked at Samuel.
“Why?”
“Because someone removed it from the legal record.”
“Who?”
Samuel looked toward the door.
“Marcus Vale.”
“That would have been twenty years ago.”
“He was already working for his father.”
Ethan stared at the paperwork.
“If this document had been filed, Vale would have no claim.”
“Correct.”
“So the acquisition they're pushing—”
“Is based on rights they should not have.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Why didn't you expose this?”
Samuel's face became distant.
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“Your father accused me of stealing proprietary data.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then why would he destroy your career?”
“Because I found something worse.”
Ethan waited.
Samuel opened the bottom drawer.
Inside was a photograph.
Four men stood together at a construction site.
Richard Harrison.
Adrian Vale.
Samuel Boyd.
And a fourth man Ethan did not recognize.
“Who is he?”
“Peter Lang.”
“What did he do?”
“He designed the financial systems Harrison Global still uses.”
Ethan frowned.
“Still uses?”
Samuel nodded.
“Parts of them.”
“What happened to him?”
“He died.”
“When?”
“Three days after he discovered Richard and Adrian were moving money through shell companies.”
Ethan became very still.
“Was it an accident?”
Samuel looked at him.
“No.”
THE SYSTEM UNDER THE SYSTEM
Ethan ordered the board meeting delayed.
Charles Rourke was furious.
Marcus Vale was even more insistent.
“We have a deadline.”
Ethan replied:
“So do I.”
He left with Samuel.
For the next four hours they went through Archive Room Seven.
What they discovered was worse than Ethan expected.
Twenty years earlier, Richard Harrison and Adrian Vale had built a hidden financial structure beneath Harrison Global.
It allowed them to move funds between subsidiaries.
At first, the system had been legal.
Then it evolved.
Shell corporations were created.
Debt was transferred.
Losses were hidden.
Profits were redirected.
Eventually, Richard became afraid of what Adrian might do.
He tried to end their arrangement.
But before he could, Peter Lang discovered evidence that billions of dollars had passed through hidden accounts.
Peter intended to report it.
Three days later, he died in what police called a highway accident.
Samuel had been Peter's closest friend.
He began investigating.
Richard panicked.
Rather than protect Samuel, he sacrificed him.
