A sharp, violent crackle echoed through the neighborhood as a small flame erupted near the connection. It wasn't the whole vehicle on fire, just the jerry-rigged equipment resting against the car's body.

Karen screamed. "My car!"

She blindly lunged toward the flames. David crossed the asphalt faster than I thought a sixty-three-year-old man could move.

"Back up!" David roared. When Karen ignored him, he grabbed her forcefully by the arm and yanked her backward just as the flame spread rapidly across the plastic housing of the adapter. Intense heat began licking against the lower edge of the Tesla, directly near the charging port.

My first panicked instinct was to run for the garden hose.

"No water!" David barked at me, anticipating my move.

Right. Electrical fire. Water would be disastrous.

"Call 911!" David ordered over his shoulder.

"I already am!" I had the phone to my ear, listening to the dispatcher ring.

David sprinted back to his own open garage and emerged seconds later wielding a heavy-duty chemical fire extinguisher. Keeping a strict, safe distance from the vehicle's volatile undercarriage, he aimed at the base of the flaming equipment. A cloud of thick white retardant smothered the fire. The initial flame reduced to a smolder, then violently flared again, fighting the chemicals.

By the time the wailing sirens of the fire department pierced the quiet suburban night, thick smoke was pouring freely from the melted, ruined charging unit, and the immaculate front side of the Tesla was deeply, permanently scorched. Miraculously, the fire had not breached the main battery pack underneath.

That distinction mattered a lot.

The firefighters secured the scene in minutes, neutralizing the electrical threat and cordoning off the driveway. Karen stood shivering barefoot in the street, wrapped tightly in a fleece blanket that a concerned neighbor had rushed over.

She looked at her ruined car, then turned her head and saw me standing on the edge of the lawn.

Everything shifted in an instant. The shock melted off her face, replaced by a cold, venomous fury. She raised a shaking finger and pointed it directly at my chest in front of the assembled first responders.
