“It means if you want someone to train with you, ask.”
Ryan stared at her.
“Okay.”
He gestured toward the mat.
“Will you train with me?”
Angela shook her head.
“No.”
Ryan blinked.
“Why?”
“Because you asked after insulting me.”
Jason laughed.
Derek, standing near the heavy bags, watched carefully.
Mike entered the room.
He saw the tension.
He knew immediately that something had changed.
“Everybody back to training.”
People obeyed.
But the tension remained.
Three days later, the challenge was born.
Ryan had joked that if Angela thought she knew so much about technique, she should prove it.
Jason had joined in.
Derek had asked whether everyone was serious.
Angela had listened.
Then she had said:
“Three rounds.”
And now she stood on the mat.
Facing Jason Mercer.
The boy who had once told Ethan that he wasn't built for competition.
Mike raised his hand.
“Ready?”
Jason nodded.
Angela nodded.
“Go.”
Jason attacked.
And Angela moved directly into him.
She caught his entry.
Turned.
Redirected.
Jason stumbled.
Angela didn't take him down.
She simply released him.
Jason recovered.
His eyes widened.
Angela said quietly:
“Again.”
Jason attacked harder.
This time, she met him halfway.
He grabbed her.
She rotated her hips.
His grip broke.
She stepped behind him.
Jason spun.
Angela was already gone.
He turned again.
She was there.
Palm against his shoulder.
Balance broken.
Jason caught himself.
Mike called:
“Thirty seconds.”
Jason's breathing was becoming audible.
Angela remained calm.
He rushed one final time.
Angela sidestepped and used a controlled sweep.
Jason landed flat on his back.
The room went silent.
Angela offered her hand.
Jason stared at it.
Then took it.
She pulled him up.
He looked at her.
“You've done this before.”
Angela nodded.
“How long?”
“Long enough.”
Jason looked toward Ryan.
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
Derek looked thoughtful.
Mike simply crossed his arms.
Jason asked:
“Where did you train?”
Angela answered:
“Places you probably haven't heard of.”
“That's not an answer.”
“It wasn't meant to be.”
Mike called time.
Jason stepped away.
Derek walked forward.
He was the biggest of the three.
He was also the quietest.
He looked at Angela.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at Angela.
“Your son.”
Angela waited.
“He thinks we're the reason he's losing confidence.”
Angela's face became still.
Derek continued.
“Is that why you're doing this?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Angela looked at Ethan.
“Because I want him to understand something.”
“What?”
Angela turned back to him.
“That respect isn't something you demand after you become strong.”
She paused.
“You practice it before.”
Derek nodded slowly.
“Fair.”
He stepped onto the mat.
Angela looked at Mike.
“Ready?”
Mike raised his hand.
“Ready.”
Derek lowered his stance.
The room became completely silent.
“Go.”
Derek moved.
And for the first time that night, Angela's expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Because Derek's first movement told her something the others hadn't.
He wasn't trying to win.
He was trying to understand her.
And that made him much more dangerous.
The Heavyweight
Derek Sloan was thirty-four years old and weighed 238 pounds.
He had been wrestling since he was seven.
He had competed in collegiate wrestling.
He had spent years doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He had learned how to use weight without wasting movement.
He didn't need to be fast.
He only needed to get hold of someone once.
Most people understood that too late.
Angela understood it immediately.
Derek advanced slowly.
Angela circled.
He didn't chase.
He cut the angle.
She changed direction.
He changed with her.
A few students whispered.
Ryan watched closely.
Jason sat on the edge of the mat, elbows resting on his knees.
Mike watched both of them.
Derek reached.
Angela moved.
His hand almost caught her sleeve.
Almost.
Derek stopped.
“You're good.”
Angela said nothing.
He tried again.
This time his fingers touched her arm.
He didn't grab.
He reset.
Angela nodded.
“Better.”
Derek's eyes narrowed.
“You're teaching me?”
“I'm giving you feedback.”
He smiled slightly.
“What's the difference?”
“You'll know when you're ready.”
Derek attacked.
His movement was explosive.
Angela stepped back.
His shoulder nearly touched hers.
She pivoted.
He turned.
Angela's hand found his elbow.
For a moment, the enormous man was off balance.
But his base was too strong.
He recovered.
The room murmured.
Derek smiled.
“Almost.”
Angela nodded.
“Very.”
Derek came again.
This time he secured a grip.
The difference in size became obvious.
He lifted.
Angela's feet left the mat.
Several students gasped.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Mom!”
Angela landed.
Controlled.
She had not panicked.
She had used the momentum to rotate and escape.
Derek released immediately.
“Sorry.”
Angela shook her head.
“You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”
Derek frowned.
“What?”
“You found the opening.”
“But I had you.”
“You had the position.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Angela looked at him.
“That's what people confuse.”
Derek listened.
“Having a position doesn't mean having control.”
Something changed in Derek's face.
He nodded.
Then he attacked again.
This time Angela allowed him to secure the grip.
She worked patiently.
A hand here.
A shift there.
A small adjustment of her foot.
Derek's posture changed.
Angela moved.
He stumbled.
She redirected him.
His knee touched the mat.
Angela immediately released.
Derek stood.
He wasn't embarrassed.
He looked impressed.
“How?”
Angela smiled.
“Physics.”
Ryan laughed.
Derek looked at him.
“Shut up.”
The room laughed.
The tension eased.
But Angela knew the lesson wasn't over.
Derek looked toward Ethan.
“You know what your problem is?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Angela watched.
Derek pointed at the mat.
“You're worried about losing.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“So?”
“So you're trying not to lose instead of trying to learn.”
Ethan looked down.
Derek continued.
“I did the same thing when I was sixteen.”
Angela raised an eyebrow.
Derek shrugged.
“I hated getting thrown.”
Jason laughed.
“You still hate it.”
“Obviously.”
Even Ethan smiled.
For the first time in weeks.
Ryan noticed.
And something about that bothered him.
Not because Angela had embarrassed him.
Not because she had beaten Jason.
But because Ethan was smiling again.
Ryan stood.
“I want another round.”
Mike looked at him.
“No.”
Ryan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you're emotional.”
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“I'm fine.”
“You're not.”
Ryan looked toward Angela.
“I can handle it.”
Angela spoke quietly.
“He doesn't need to prove anything.”
Ryan turned.
“You think I'm trying to prove something?”
“Yes.”
“To you?”
“No.”
Angela glanced toward Ethan.
“To yourself.”
The room went quiet.
Ryan's face hardened.
He stepped forward.
“You don't know me.”
