“Hey.”

Ethan turned.

Ryan stopped several feet away.

“I owe you an apology.”

Ethan looked confused.

“For what?”

“For telling you that you weren't built for competition.”

Ethan said nothing.

“I was wrong.”

Ryan took a breath.

“And I said it because I wanted to feel like I was better than somebody.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?”

Ryan smiled sadly.

“Because I was insecure.”

Ethan thought about that.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

Ryan blinked.

“Okay?”

“Yeah.”

“That's it?”

Ethan shrugged.

“What else am I supposed to say?”

Ryan laughed.

“Fair.”

Ethan picked up his backpack.

“Want to train tomorrow?”

Ryan smiled.

“Sure.”

Angela watched.

She didn't interfere.

She didn't need to.

The next Monday, something happened that changed everything.

A regional tournament announced an open invitational.

Several Westbridge students planned to compete.

Jason was entered.

Derek was entered.

Ryan was entered.

Ethan had been considering it.

Then the head organizer announced that the tournament would include a mixed-age technical exhibition designed to encourage newer competitors.

Mike suggested Ethan participate.

Ethan looked terrified.

Angela didn't answer for him.

“What do you think?” she asked.

“I don't know.”

“That wasn't the question.”

Ethan took a breath.

“I want to.”

“Then go.”

“What if I lose?”

“You probably will.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Mom.”

She smiled.

“Everyone loses eventually.”

“What if everyone laughs?”

“Then they'll laugh.”

“What if I embarrass myself?”

Angela leaned closer.

“Then you will have survived embarrassment.”

Ethan smiled.

“That's your answer to everything?”

“No.”

“What is?”

Angela looked him directly in the eyes.

“Do the thing you are afraid to do for the right reason.”

Ethan nodded.

“I'll enter.”

The decision should have been simple.

It wasn't.

Because the tournament director had one more announcement.

The final technical exhibition would feature three black belts against one experienced female instructor.

The event was intended to demonstrate positional control and self-defense principles.

Mike looked at Angela.

Angela looked at him.

“No.”

Mike smiled.

“You didn't even let me ask.”

“I know what you're going to ask.”

Jason overheard.

“Do it.”

Angela looked at him.

Jason smiled.

“It would be good for the academy.”

Derek nodded.

Ryan added:

“And for Ethan.”

Angela sighed.

“You're all terrible at persuasion.”

Mike laughed.

“So?”

Angela looked at Ethan.

He was smiling.

She shook her head.

“Fine.”

But there was one condition.

“No spectacle.”

Mike nodded.

“No spectacle.”

And then Jason asked the question that would later become famous.

“Who do you want?”

Angela looked at the three black belts.

And said:

“All of you.”

The Three-Round Test

The exhibition night arrived.

Westbridge was packed.

Students stood along the walls.

Parents filled the chairs.

Visitors stood in the doorway.

The atmosphere felt less like a class and more like a championship.

But Angela refused to let it become a performance.

She walked onto the mat wearing the same plain black shirt.

No rank.

No medal.

No introduction.

Mike took the microphone.

“Three technical rounds. Two minutes each. No striking. No submissions held past the tap. The purpose is demonstration, not humiliation.”

Angela looked at the three men.

Ryan nodded.

Jason nodded.

Derek nodded.

Mike raised his hand.

“Round one. Jason Mercer.”

Jason stepped forward.

They touched hands.

“Go.”

Jason immediately attacked.

This time, Angela didn't wait.

She moved first.

A quick grip.

A shift.

A change of angle.

Jason followed.

He tried to establish control.

Angela denied it.

They moved around the mat.

The difference from their first meeting was obvious.

Jason was no longer trying to prove she was overrated.

He was trying to solve her.

That made the round fascinating.

Angela allowed him to enter.

Then escaped.

He changed tactics.

She changed with him.

He attacked the legs.

She disengaged.

He attempted a transition.

She anticipated it.

Finally, Jason managed to take her down.

The room erupted.

Angela immediately smiled.

“Good.”

Jason looked surprised.

“You're happy?”

“You earned it.”

He tried to secure position.

Angela waited.

Then she created a small gap.

One inch.

That was enough.

She escaped.

The timer sounded.

“Time.”

Jason stood.

He was breathing hard.

Angela barely was.

They touched hands.

Jason smiled.

“Now I understand.”

Angela nodded.

“Good.”

Round two.

Ryan Cole.

Ryan stepped onto the mat.

He looked at Angela.

“No jokes.”

“No.”

“No ego.”

“No.”

“Deal?”

“Deal.”

They touched hands.

The round began.

Ryan moved beautifully.

His footwork was sharp.

His entries were clean.

Angela respected him.

He attempted a takedown.

She defended.

He transitioned.

She countered.

He changed levels again.

Angela caught his arm.

Ryan rolled.

She released.

He came up behind her.

For the first time, Angela had to move quickly.

Ryan almost secured the position.

Almost.

She turned.

They faced each other.

The students were silent.

Ryan smiled.

“There.”

Angela smiled back.

“Yes.”

He attacked again.

Angela redirected him.

Ryan stumbled.

She didn't finish.

She simply reset.

The timer sounded.

Ryan was exhausted.

He sat down.

Angela offered him water.

He took it.

“You could've finished.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because the point was control.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Not winning.”

“Exactly.”

Round three.

Derek Sloan.

He stepped onto the mat.

The crowd quieted.

Derek had the size advantage.

He also had experience.

Angela knew she couldn't rely on strength.

Derek knew that too.

He moved slowly.

Angela moved around him.

He reached.

She evaded.

He cut the angle.

She changed direction.

Then Derek caught her.

He secured a body lock.

The crowd gasped.

Angela's feet left the mat.

Derek controlled the lift.

But Angela remained calm.

She adjusted.

Her hands found his wrist.

Her hips shifted.

One foot touched the mat.

Then the other.

Derek tried to maintain control.

Angela rotated.

His balance broke.

He released.

She stepped away.

Derek stared.

“How did you do that?”

Angela smiled.

“You gave me the answer.”

He frowned.

“When?”

“When you lifted me.”

Derek understood.

“You used the movement.”

“Yes.”

The crowd applauded.

Mike looked at the clock.

“Thirty seconds.”

Derek nodded.

He advanced again.

This time, Angela didn't move backward.

She stepped forward.

Derek tried to establish the grip.

Angela controlled his arm.

He adjusted.

She adjusted.

They became still.

For three seconds, neither moved.

Then Angela shifted.

Derek's knee touched the mat.

She released.

The timer sounded.

The exhibition ended.

The crowd applauded.

But Angela didn't raise her hands.

She didn't bow dramatically.

She simply walked toward Ethan.

Ethan was standing at the edge of the mat.

She stopped in front of him.

“Well?”
