Not because it was strange.
Because it was familiar.
He had seen fighters sit that way before a difficult match.
People who were nervous moved.
People who were inexperienced looked around.
People who were trying to impress others watched the room.
This woman did none of those things.
She simply breathed.
Coach Silva said nothing.
But he remembered her face.
And he wondered why.
Fresh Meat
"Line up!"
Coach Silva's voice cracked across the warehouse.
Everyone moved immediately.
Black belts first.
Then brown.
Purple.
Blue.
White.
Maya—the new woman's name would soon become known to everyone—quietly joined the end of the white-belt line.
Beside her stood a nervous teenager named Daniel.
He was sixteen, skinny, and clearly terrified.
Marcus looked back.
He saw Maya.
Then Daniel.
He whispered to Leo.
"Fresh meat."
Leo smiled.
Coach Silva began the warm-up.
Twenty minutes.
No shortcuts.
The students jogged around the mat before dropping into sprawls, shrimping, bear crawls, forward rolls, backward rolls, hip escapes, technical stand-ups, and endless push-ups.
Within five minutes, Daniel was gasping.
Maya wasn't.
She moved economically.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Just efficiently.
Her feet landed beneath her hips.
Her breathing stayed controlled.
During shrimping, she didn't waste movement.
During technical stand-ups, her hands and feet moved with almost mechanical precision.
Leo noticed.
He frowned.
"She's done this before."
Marcus shrugged.
"Everybody thinks they're special."
Jax laughed.
Then came the final exercise.
Twenty burpees.
The room groaned.
Daniel struggled through number twelve.
Maya finished number twenty and calmly stood.
Jax stared at her.
He didn't like what he was seeing.
Coach Silva clapped.
"Good. Now pair up."
Immediately, Jax walked toward Maya.
"I'll take her."
Coach Silva looked at him.
"Beginner?"
Jax nodded.
"Yes."
Coach Silva's eyes narrowed.
"Then remember what beginner means."
Jax smiled.
"Of course."
He walked toward Maya.
"You ready?"
She adjusted her glasses.
"Yes."
"What's your name?"
"Maya."
"First day?"
She nodded.
"First day here."
Jax smiled.
"Good."
He slapped his hands together.
"Let's see what you know."
They touched hands.
The timer started.
Jax immediately exploded forward.
He shot for a double-leg takedown with far more force than necessary.
Maya stepped back.
He missed.
Jax recovered and rushed again.
This time she pivoted.
His shoulder passed beside her.
She placed one hand against his back.
He stumbled.
The room went quiet for half a second.
Jax turned.
"What was that?"
Maya said nothing.
"Again."
He charged.
She moved.
Again.
Jax missed.
The third time, he caught her leg.
"Got you."
He tried to lift.
Maya lowered her weight.
She turned her knee.
Her foot touched the mat.
Then she rotated.
Jax suddenly found himself on his back.
Maya had taken his arm.
Not violently.
Not quickly.
Just perfectly.
Her knee controlled his shoulder.
Her hand controlled his wrist.
Jax froze.
Maya looked at him.
"You okay?"
His face reddened.
"Let go."
She released him immediately.
The timer had stopped.
Nobody laughed.
Coach Silva looked at Maya.
Then at Jax.
"Reset."
Jax stood.
His pride had been injured.
And he was not going to forget it.
The First Mistake
After class, Jax approached Marcus.
"She got lucky."
Marcus nodded.
"Obviously."
Leo wasn't convinced.
"I saw what she did."
"She's small," Marcus said. "Small people learn tricks because they can't fight."
