"What?"
She hesitated.
"Things I need to remember."
Coach Silva smiled.
"Jiu-Jitsu?"
"Life."
He nodded.
After a moment, he asked.
"Where did you train?"
Maya looked at the notebook.
"Brazil."
Silva froze.
"Where?"
"São Paulo."
"Academy?"
She gave him a name.
Silva stared.
He knew it.
That academy had produced several elite competitors.
"Who was your instructor?"
Maya hesitated again.
"Rafael Costa."
Silva's eyes widened.
Rafael Costa had been one of the best instructors he had ever known.
"He taught me when I was young," Maya said.
"Young?"
"I started when I was nine."
Silva studied her.
"Why did you stop?"
Maya closed the notebook.
"My father died."
Silva said nothing.
"My mother couldn't afford the training. We moved. I had to work."
"And now?"
"I'm finally in a place where I can return."
Silva nodded slowly.
"Why white belt?"
Maya smiled faintly.
"Because I haven't earned anything here."
Silva smiled.
That was the answer he had hoped for.
The Challenge
The following Friday, the gym was crowded.
Jax had been talking all afternoon.
He wanted another roll with Maya.
Marcus warned him.
"Don't underestimate her."
Jax scoffed.
"I won't."
Leo said nothing.
He had already learned that Maya was dangerous.
But Jax needed to learn it himself.
When sparring began, Jax walked toward Maya.
"Your turn."
Maya looked at him.
"Okay."
They started.
Jax attacked aggressively.
He shot for a takedown.
Maya sprawled.
He switched to a single leg.
She whizzered.
He drove forward.
She pivoted.
Suddenly Jax was underneath her.
She controlled his wrist.
He exploded upward.
Maya shifted.
He rolled.
She followed.
He tried to scramble.
She stayed attached.
Thirty seconds later, Jax tapped.
Silence.
Maya immediately released him.
Jax sat up, breathing hard.
"Again."
Coach Silva shook his head.
"No."
Jax looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because you don't know why you lost."
Jax clenched his fists.
Maya stood.
She didn't look proud.
She didn't look victorious.
She simply bowed.
"Thank you."
Jax didn't bow back.
That was the moment Coach Silva knew the situation was becoming dangerous.
Not because Maya was dangerous.
Because Jax's pride was.
Three Against One
The incident happened two weeks later.
It was after the official class had ended.
Only a handful of students remained.
Marcus, Leo, and Jax were together.
Maya was putting on her shoes.
Marcus called out.
"Hey."
She turned.
"Want another round?"
Maya shook her head.
"I'm finished."
"Scared?"
"No."
"Then stay."
Maya looked at Coach Silva.
He was speaking to another student near the front desk.
Marcus stepped closer.
"One round."
Maya sighed.
"Okay."
She returned to the mat.
Leo joined them.
Maya looked at him.
"You too?"
He smiled.
"Just watching."
Jax stepped onto the mat.
Marcus followed.
Maya frowned.
"That's two."
Marcus shrugged.
"Three minutes."
Coach Silva looked over.
His expression changed.
"Marcus."
Marcus ignored him.
Maya looked at the three men.
Then at Coach Silva.
She could have walked away.
Instead, she said quietly:
"If you need to do this, then do it properly."
Marcus smiled.
"What does that mean?"
"One at a time."
Leo laughed.
"Confident."
Maya bowed.
The first round began.
Jax attacked.
Maya avoided him.
Marcus entered.
She redirected him.
Leo tried to take her back.
She escaped.
They switched constantly.
The room became silent.
Maya never tried to hurt them.
She simply survived.
Minute after minute.
Eventually Jax collapsed against the wall.
