Leo glanced toward Maya.

She was packing her gi.

No celebration.

No smirk.

No attempt to impress anyone.

That somehow made things worse.

The next evening, Maya returned.

So did Jax.

This time he didn't approach her.

Marcus did.

"You're new, right?"

Maya nodded.

"You should probably start with someone your size."

She looked around.

"I don't see anyone my size."

Marcus laughed.

"Fair point."

He stepped onto the mat.

"I'll go easy."

Coach Silva immediately looked over.

"Marcus."

Marcus turned.

"Yes, Coach?"

"Light training."

Marcus smiled.

"Always."

Maya bowed.

They started.

Marcus grabbed her collar.

His first instinct was to use pressure.

He pushed forward.

Maya moved backward.

Marcus followed.

He tried to pin her against the edge.

She turned sideways.

He reached for her arm.

She withdrew it.

He reached again.

This time she caught his wrist.

Marcus smiled.

"You're not getting that."

Maya didn't pull.

Instead, she stepped closer.

Her shoulder moved beneath his arm.

Her hips turned.

Marcus suddenly lost his balance.

He planted a foot.

Maya released him.

Marcus stared.

She had not thrown him.

She had simply shown him that she could.

His face hardened.

He charged.

Maya's expression didn't change.

Marcus grabbed her gi and drove forward.

Maya dropped her center of gravity.

His momentum carried him past her.

She hooked his leg.

Marcus fell.

A collective gasp came from the students.

He scrambled up immediately.

"Again."

Coach Silva stepped forward.

"Enough."

Marcus looked at him.

"We're training."

"I said enough."

Marcus backed away.

Maya bowed.

"Thank you."

Marcus stared at her.

For the first time in years, someone had embarrassed him without saying a single insulting word.

And he hated her for it.

The Girl Who Wouldn't Fight Back

The rumors began quickly.

Maya was a former athlete.

Maya had trained somewhere else.

Maya was secretly a black belt.

Maya had competed.

Maya was pretending to be a beginner.

Every version was wrong.

But there was one thing everyone agreed on.

She was different.

She wasn't trying to prove anything.

That bothered Leo.

He decided to test her psychologically.

During drilling, he whispered.

"You know this isn't going to stay easy, right?"

Maya continued drilling.

"People here are serious."

She nodded.

"I can see that."

"You don't belong here."

Maya looked at him.

"Maybe."

Leo smiled.

"At least you're honest."

Maya returned to the drill.

He expected an argument.

There wasn't one.

Later, Leo intentionally increased his pressure during sparring.

Maya defended.

He tried a triangle.

She escaped.

He tried an armbar.

She escaped.

He attempted another triangle.

Maya stacked him.

Leo's back hit the mat.

She released him immediately.

"Your neck is twisted."

Leo stared.

She had been concerned about him.

Not herself.

That was somehow more humiliating.

He got up.

"Again."

Maya nodded.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Leo could not submit her.

And she never tried to submit him.

At the end, he was exhausted.

She wasn't.

Coach Silva watched from across the room.

He finally understood what had bothered him when she first arrived.

Maya wasn't training like someone learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

She was training like someone remembering it.

The Secret in the Notebook

One night, Maya arrived early.

The gym was almost empty.

Coach Silva was cleaning the mats.

He noticed her sitting alone with a small black notebook.

"You write?"

"Sometimes."
