Over the past six months, nearly four million dollars had been systematically drained from his primary estate trust. The money was being funneled into shell LLCs based out of the Cayman Islands. And attached to the estate was a newly filed, pending legal document: a petition for conservatorship.

Richard was declaring Elijah mentally incompetent. He was trying to steal the entire estate and lock Elijah away in a facility thousands of miles from home.

But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was the signature on the conservatorship petition. It was Sarah’s.

Elijah couldn't sleep for two days. Had his only daughter betrayed him? Was she in on it? The grief threatened to break a man who had survived a war.

He decided to confront Richard directly, bypassing Sarah. He needed to look the man in the eyes. He invited Richard to his modest ranch home for a glass of bourbon under the guise of discussing his "failing memory."

Richard sat on Elijah's worn leather sofa, swirling his expensive whiskey, feigning a look of deep, sorrowful concern.

"It's normal at your age, Elijah," Richard had said smoothly, his tone dripping with condescension. "You're getting confused. You're forgetting things. Sarah and I just want you to be safe. We've found a wonderful place for you."

Elijah reached under his coffee table and pulled out a thick stack of printed bank statements, dropping them heavily onto the glass.

"I might forget where I put my reading glasses, Richard," Elijah said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. "But I don't forget four million dollars. And I don't forget the names of offshore accounts."

Richard’s fake smile vanished. The mask slipped, revealing something deeply ugly underneath. He didn't panic. He just set his glass down.

"You're a sick, paranoid old man," Richard said coldly. "If you show those to anyone, I'll have the medical board declare you delusional by Friday. I hold the power of attorney. And Sarah? She believes everything I tell her. She signed the papers herself. You have no one."

Richard walked out, leaving Elijah sitting alone in the dark.

But Richard had made a fatal miscalculation. He thought Elijah was just an old man with money. He didn't know that Elijah’s former commanding officer from Vietnam was now the Deputy Director of the FBI’s White Collar Crime Division in Atlanta.

Elijah picked up the phone.

What Richard also didn't know was that Elijah hadn't stopped digging.

Using his contacts at the FBI, who quietly pulled federal wire transfers under the radar, Elijah uncovered the true depth of the betrayal. The missing four million dollars wasn't just sitting in an offshore account. It was funding a massive, sprawling six-bedroom estate in Boca Raton, Florida.
