And living in that estate was a woman named Chloe. Along with two young children.

Richard didn't just steal Elijah's money. He had a secret second family. He had been living a double life for over six years, starting before he even married Sarah. The marriage to Sarah was nothing but a long-con to access the Brooks family fortune to fund his real life in Florida.

But the detail that finally broke Elijah’s heart, and then forged it into steel, was the signature on the conservatorship document. The FBI forensics lab ran a quick analysis on a photograph Elijah took of the paperwork.

Sarah’s signature was a masterful forgery.

She knew nothing. She wasn't betraying her father; she was the ultimate victim of a sociopathic predator.

When Elijah’s friend at the bureau told him they needed hard, physical evidence to secure a federal indictment against Richard for wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering, they arranged a drop-off. The evidence was loaded onto a secure flash drive, wrapped in a DOJ-sealed envelope, to be delivered directly to the Federal Courthouse.

But Richard wasn't stupid. He had noticed the digital footprint of someone looking into the Cayman accounts. Panicking, he realized the old man was actually making a move.

Richard needed Elijah stopped before he reached the courthouse. And in a city as big as Atlanta, a wealthy, desperate lawyer always knows a dirty cop willing to do a favor for a stack of cash.

Back in the blistering heat of the federal plaza, the pain in Elijah’s shoulder was becoming unbearable.

The young woman in the trench coat—an undercover federal marshal who had been assigned to watch for Elijah's arrival—was frantically typing on her phone, blocked from intervening by a second patrol car that had just aggressively mounted the curb.

Officer Miller, sweating heavily but eyes manic with power, ignored her entirely. He yanked a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. He grabbed Elijah’s right wrist, scraping the metal against the old man's fragile skin, and snapped the first cuff shut with a vicious click.

"Resisting arrest. Assault on an officer," Miller muttered under his breath, documenting his lies in real-time. He leaned in close, pressing his hot, coffee-scented breath against Elijah’s ear. "Richard says hello, old man. You should have just gone to the nursing home. Now you're going to a federal cell, and those documents are going into the incinerator."

Elijah slowly turned his head. Despite the agonizing pain in his shoulder, despite the humiliation of being pressed against a police car in front of a dozen recording civilians, Elijah's eyes were terrifyingly calm. It was the look of a man who had stared down machine-gun fire in the jungle.
